When Randi offered the prize did he do so using his psychic ability or with the predilection that no one would ever be able to claim it. Was there a psychic anywhere that predicted someone would prove the paranormal and collect the reward? Surely if one is psychic they would know better than to try.
Randi's experiences instilled him with enough confidence to offer an unwinnable prize. Psychics got bent out of shape over it but their experience told them that what he was asking was damn near impossible. Most stayed away, not because psychically they knew it was futile to attempt but because their own predilection told them not to try.
Was Randi a better psychic than the self proclaimed psychics or was it a reasonable conclusion for him to make? The "psychics" who stayed away, were they doing so because they possessed some strange ability to predict things? NO way. Life teaches you things, even up to the point where you can reasonably be sure of something that will happen in the future.
