Proofs in general require some axioms accepted as true.
Proofs relating to the existence/non-existence of a god or gods seem to require axioms which beg the question.
Cogent arguments on this issue seem to be the most a person can hope for.
As an atheist, I consider theist beliefs to be a comforting way to make peace with the known fact that humans are mortal. I make peace with the fact of my mortality via the following thoughts.

I hope for the courage to change for the better circumstances over which I have some control.
I hope for the serenity to accept the circumstances over which I have no control, especially my own mortality & the mortality of those I care for.
I further hope for the wisdom to know the difference between the above sets of circumstances.
