Political Correctness?

You see, it's sentiments like those of madanthonywayne’s most recent here in this thread which make me extremely suspicious of any American bitching about Political correctness. There’s not a single valid point in his entire unbroken paragraph, it’s all hyperbole and outright lies.

I’ll give you credit, madanthonywayne, you beat the living hell out of that straw man, but I’m afraid that the world you describe is not the one that we live in! Hah the “founders” rather than “founding fathers” It’s ridiculous, please go spin your yarns elsewhere, we’re talking about politics, hon.

Come on now, someone convince me, is there anything at all to all this upset over political correctness or is it all just alarmist ramblings from weirdoes who have built up an Orwellian fantasy around the fact that they are now frowned at when describing a random Hispanic as a “wet back”?

Plus its not a campaign by anyone, its merely various individuals who sometimes take it upon themselves to go beyond the bounds of common sense,

Ah good than in that case I shall now invoke the demon of "PC" lingo and shame it for labeling middle-American republicans as "values voters". I find that to be particularly contradictory to common sense (note that I could have said offensive, but when I'm the one doing the complaining than it's against common sense and THEY are the ones who don't want to offend) as we certainly all have our values, and the values of costal liberals simply told them that upholding the constitution, promoting a more egalitarian society, and ending war were more important values than banning abortion and outlawing gay marriage.

*crosses his arms and huffs* those darned PC crusaders have just got their heads on all backward!

Hmm, that leads me to another fairly obvious question - who are the crusaders for political correctness? Do we have some sort of imaginary shadowy eliet who are pushing for it? Is it the "liberal media" (haha what a joke), political think-tanks, or the politicians themselves? What does a politically correct sentiment sound like versus a non-politically correct statement? All I can see is the contrast where racial or intentionally derogatory sentiments are the only thing which clearly do not fit within the realm of political correctness.

Also, for those worried about everyone being too "PC" what are the perceived penalties for stepping outside of these boundaries?

Heck, I still hate the politically correctness on so-called "bad words". Don't call me a shithead, but a poopoohead is just fine, even though it means the SAME DARN THING! Don't call me an asshole, but stinkyhead is fine. Yuck, sugar-coating. *gag*

Nothing wrong with being a value voter. My values are different from tony Blairs, thats why I vote Lib-dem, since they are the only remotely left wing major party in the UK.

Madanthonywane has his equivalents on the "left", you might have seen one or two on sciforums, but, as always, it is bad form to judge an entire group by their outlying nutters.

Ahh you seem to misunderstand - in the United States a "values Voter" is a term only used to describe someone against liberal principals and vote out of a compulsion to make abortion illegal, ban gay mariage and push for more religious involvement in government and vice versa whereas liberals voting to end war or the like are perceived to be "not values voters".

Sounds more like a deep southern fried bible puncher to me. Anyway, religion and politics should not mix, even if every other word your presidents say is I pray to god, yadda yadda yadda.

At LAST!! Someone with sense:

I will offer a differing perspective. I will say that the phrase "political correctness" is a counter-reaction, an attempt to deny the validity to REAL shifts in thinking and language. That is, those who wield the phrase "politically correct" against those who they deem politically correct are doing so in order to "Keep them down," or at least stall the need to examine their own thought patterns. Or confront their complicity. Or even guilt.

So, for example, if language rightfully shifts from "Spanish" to "Hispanic" to "Latino" or even "Chicano," or from "Indian" to "Native American," those are shifts that are real and important. They may be uncomfortable shifts for people who like their fixed way of seeing the world, but language reflects culture, and culture is making some new strides. So think carefully about what values and beliefs are really worth holding on to, and which ones are worth letting go of.

Just thought yo might want to see another angle.

And on religion and politics not mixing, I heartily agree. It is one thing that the USA is a good example of, though maybe not for much longer. (Mind you, we've effectively been like that for a century ehre as well)
If you look at British history from the 17th century for example, let alone mainland Europe for the 16th and 17th centuries, you can see well enough why religion and politics dont go together well.
