I’ve never been completely certain of what all this belly aching about political correctness is really about. I mean, to me, and maybe I’m just not paying enough attention, but to me all political correctness really means is not calling black people niggers or referring to your Hispanic co-worker in terms as though he were an illegal immigrant – in other words just don’t be an asshole in front of people.
What other practical effects of political correctness do we see around us other than these sorts of instances?
I also find it odd that people so often accuse political correctness of being an invention of the left - what about ideas like individual rights to bear arms, or "Sanctity of marriage" or other similarly silly right-wing ideas that no one seems to question, would these count as political correctness, or does it only work when talking about identity politics?
The only other time I hear about political correctness aside from common courtesy is when people bitch about it and want to act as if they’re somehow defying some sort of oppressive cultural standard in speaking their minds – just a way to stroke their own egos. I just don’t see what the big deal is :/

Well the UK is run by the left wing, so it is bound to have a bit of commie in there somewhere.

There are certain groups amongst us, usually petty council officials who have a jumped up ego and think they are important. These people are categorised mainly into "lefties" which I include liberals in that description.
They decide that its not politically correct to mention that a person is:
blind: visually impaired
fat: horizontally challenged
short: virtically challenged
black: afro caribbean (the blacks call themselves blacks, but we are not allowed to)!
Paki: nickname for people from Pakistan, but called racist under the politically correct.

I could fill this forum with descriptives that we, in a country of FREE SPEECH are NOT allowed to utter under pain of possible racist prosecution or being denegrated as such, although the person uttering anything none pc may well not be racist.
Even the authorities are in it big style. A fire engine cannot display a flag of st george as its offensive. Police officers cannot wear similar tie pins, as offensive.
The police are amongst the worst culprits and yet do the most damage to the population. I see "black" and "paki" drivers all night long flouting the laws of our land, but the Police ignore them, its too much hassle to arrest a "black" or "paki".
A white, sorry caucasian, friend of mine was stopped by a couple of police for a minor traffic violation and he queried the fact that several local asian drivers had just done the same thing, he got clobbered and verbally abused for even "daring" to suggest they were being "racist" which of course, they are.
PC is so bad here, and so very dangerous, that certain sections of the media take great delight in publically ridiculing said pc brigade and show stories on thier ineptitude every day, but nothing ever gets done as those of us of a none ethnic persuasion, whatever that means, suffer from the typically British disease of APATHY!
They have whole committees who do nothing but sit and decide what words we are not allowed to say today. And believe me, you will get sacked if your caught working for said council and say something wrong. The BBC have a book on what news presenters etc cannot say. It might offend the puffs, shirtlifters who infest their organistation.
Aaah so it's all part of a campaign to promote Anglo on Anglo racism? I of course have absolutely no first hand (or particularly adequate second hand) concept of the political or social climate within the UK, so certainly I can't really tell you with any authority that that sounds a bit out there, but please forgive me if I roll my eyes a bit and give a chuckle as you make yourself sound a bit like a loon.

The idea that this or that minority group is getting a free ride because the local news anchor isn’t aloud to refer to them as spics or the like is the sort of sentiment that I’m accustomed too with these sorts, and your complaints about codes of verbal conduct at the BBC and how you think the Police are behaving while citing instances that happened to a friend of yours sort of smacks of the same general thing.
But again. . . you’re there and I’m here, so what the hell do I know? Even if your complaints seem a little silly to me I’m sure they’re really important in your personal context. It's just that it's my experience that some people put far too much emphasis on the trauma caused them by the fact that people will frown when they make a racial slur in public.

Political correctness is Orwellian in the most literal sense of the word. A major concept put forth by Orwell was that by controlling language one could control thought. The government as depicted in 1x84 was devoted to simplifing the language and to removing the words for any unacceptable thoughts. [my "nine" key is broken thanks to an accident involving cocco puffs and a mongoloid]. The Left, through its control of the universities and the media, is attempting a similiar project. All the ideas, people, and things that made the West the dominent culture on earth are depicted in the most negative way possible, while ideas and people from other cultures are promoted. American schools no longer teach about the "Founding Fathers", but the "Founders" [never mind that they were all men, we can't allow people to get the idea that men did something good]. Drug addicts who lie around in public places are no longer bums, they're "homeless". You see, "bum" implies some sense of responsibility for oneself. "Homeless" suggests complete innocence. A victim of circustance. Males and masculine traits are now viewed with such suspicion that an entire generation of young men is being drugged to make young schoolboys behave like young schoolgirls. Guns, and toy guns, are now so un-PC that you can hardly find them at toy stores anymore [they've made a bit of a comeback since Sept 11]. Even Orwell's once speculative idea of a "thought crime" is now reality with laws against "hate". As if murdering someone because he is black is worse then murdering him just to watch him die. He's still dead. PC is more than just a bunch of BS, it is insidious, evil BS that should be opposed at every turn. It is the self hate of liberal elites that has infected our culture and will ultimately destroy it if it is not stopped.
you've got it about right, Mystech. The original PC was about not calling people by insulting names, eg nigger. Calling someone who looked like they were from Pakistan "Paki" was usually an insult as well, and still is in much of society here in the UK.
Plus its not a campaign by anyone, its merely various individuals who sometimes take it upon themselves to go beyond the bounds of common sense, red devil having pointed out one or two of those. However, the term is now used by large numbers of right wingers in the UK as an insulting label, to be applied to anyone who disagrees with them, e.g. suggests that English culture isnt quite what its boosters would have you believe it is.
Ultimately, it is a small part of the swing against the patriotism crap that was all to common in the 20th century. Instead of taking revered icons of the country/ culture etc as icons, the idea of the (not PC but related to it) movement was to bring them back down to earth and show that they too were human. Like pointing out that many of the founding fathers had slaves. Like any other pendulum swings it has probably gone too far, but then it will swing back again, as encouraged by sections of the media. You will already have seen how some people think you should stick by your president in wartime, and how slagging off america is evil.
