Philosophical Movies

Someone said something about Donnie Darko up there ^^^ I watched it recently, and I think it is a really good philosophical movie...

The Enigma of Caspar Hauser, a Werner herzog movie. An otherwise normal, intelligent man raised in isolation and sensory deprivation until his 30's is suddenly released to make his way in the society of a small german village.

I can't believe no one has mentioned it, but I think this movie is perhaps the best thing ever made:

"rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead"

oh, and I don't know if i'd consider it necessarily "philosophical" but if you're looking for goddamned strange, see:

"schizopolis"

I think that's how it's spelled.

Yes... rosencrantz and guildenstern ... :D

Try also "Amelie", my favorite one....
"Lilo and Stich" is also nice, altough not highly philosophical... :D
(it has a nice message about families)

And there are also other kid's movies that are pretty good...

"Passion of The Christ, The Others, Shrek."
you're joking right???
i can sorta see what you mean about the others, but not shrek or passions

"Someone said something about Donnie Darko up there ^^^ I watched it recently, and I think it is a really good philosophical movie..."

I actually know that one!! But it's some 15 years since I've seen it ...

"Zelig" by Woody Allen: A fake documentary about a man chameleon. Questions of identity.

How bout "Flowers for Algernon"? (or "Charlie" I guess they called it. Don't know why they changed the name.) Not as good as the book (are they ever?) but definitely thought provoking.

Blade Runner
Twelve Monkeys
Vanilla Sky

I hate to say it but, whatever that movie was with Jim Carrey where his whole life is broadcast on television...

It's been said, but bears repeating:

Kubrick, Tarkovsky, Cronenberg.

Check out anything and everything by those directors.

It's called "The Truman Show"... ;)

What's up with the "Twelve Monkeys"?
I didn't find that so philosophical...

EDIT: Interesting...
Real life Truman Show

You're Kidding, A brilliant study on the nature of time, free-will, and fate.
It repeatedly asks if the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. And it touches on the rights of the state to dictate/manipulate peoples lives.
or were you kidding?

Oh yeah. Duh. I completely forgot about the movie.
The only memory that is left is that annoying music... :D :D :D

Somebody else mentioned it, but Taxi Driver's such an outstanding film, it deserves a second plug. Questions the nature of man in the face of overpowering isolation, and it inspired Hinckley's unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Reagan, thus givin' the thing a art-imitating-life-imitating-art thing. Oh, and it's DeNiro's best performance, and the guy's the best actor of the past thirty years. Keitel makes the repugnant Sport an almost likeable guy, and Jodie Foster's scarily intense. Peter Boyle, in a minor role as Wizard, another cabbie, tosses off a few philosophical one liners, including "You get a job, you become the job." Oh, and Scorcese has a great cameo as an enraged fare ... Tarantino really shoulda watched it before he did Resevoir Dogs.

ALso try Dark city. I has something very philosophical to it. It's in between the matrix and donnie darko albeith it's older. It is a great movie.

Another one sorta similar to 'dark city' is 'the city of lost children'.

It is a wild movie with many philosophical elements. There is one character that is a floating brain. Ch-check it out.
