Osama Bin Laden is Dead

Yikes. One would think they took out a CEO for Goldman Sachs or Bank of America or something. You know, someone responsible for vastly greater suffering...

No, I do not. I do know that Clinton could have just as easily sent in troops to insure that Osama was dead instead of the half hearted attempt that sending in one missile to kill him. It seems that Clinton was responsible for letting him "get away" the first time and you just won't see that will you? You blame the Republicans , who by the way balanced the budget even with Clinton in office, for something that Clinton could have overridden just as President Obama has overridden Congress by sending in over a billion dollars worth of bombs to Libya without Congressional approval either.

LOL, why am I not suprised your memory fails you in this instance. :) Let me refresh your memory then:

http://www.slate.com/id/11384/

Republicans were more interested in impeaching Clinton than defending the nation.

And where is your evidence that Clinton dropped a billion dollars worth of bombs? I know that plays well in Republican circles where facts are not needed or wanted. But let's try to play in the real world here.

As for your claims of balancing the budget under the Clinton administration; you apparently forgot about Clinton refusing to cave in to Republican budget demands. And as a result, the government was shut down.

Clinton had been pushing for fiscal responsiblilty versus irresponsibility being pushed by Republicans. And Clinton won the budget battles with the Republican Congress...one of them honest details that keeps biting Republicans in the sensitive areas. :)

This is very good news for the nation. But it is very bad news for Republicans/Tea Partiers..
Can't you just be an American for one day, put the politics aside, and celebrate a significant victory that has been a long time coming?

President Obama and our troops have earned the gratitude of every American, not just Democrats This is good news for us all.

I am an American all the time. :) And this good news for Americans who care more about the nation. I watched the coverage on all channels this morning. Fox seemed rather glum this morning as opposed to their normal playful mood.

Please reread my post, I said that President Obama has dropped over a billion dollars worth of bombs on Libya, not Clinton but Clinton could have overstepped Congress just as President Obama has in starting a war with Libya without Congressional approval.

Well Republicans were in charge of both houses when Clinton was in power so they easily could have over rode any veto that he signed. So that said Clinton was only going along with the Republicans because they had him over a barrel.

President Obama has not dropped a billion dollars worth of bombs on Libya. Where is your proof?

Yeah, every time Clinton tried to respond to Obama, he got the "tail wagged the dog" accusation from Republicans. Imagine what Republicans who controlled congress would have done if Clinton sent boots on the ground.

Already estimates are coming in that the cost of the Libya operation could be over $1 billion dollars. Sadly, this is a small number when you consider that costs of the wars in Afghanistan ($377,025,390,632) and Iraq ($773,698,442,965) total to over $1 Trillion spent on wars since 2001.

It doesn’t stop there. National Journal reports that the Pentagon is asking for $708.3 billion this year, including another $159.3 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Now let’s think about those numbers and let’s go over some of the proposed cuts in President Obama’s budget and the cuts the House GOP is proposing to pay for this:

•President Obama is proposing to cut $2.5 billion in heating assistance for low-income people (LIHEAP).
•President Obama is proposing to cut $300 million from Community Development Block Grants, which the Congressional Black Caucus is strongly opposed to.
•President Obama is proposing to cut $100 billion cut in Pell Grants over 10 years.

Doesn't matter, the Republicans have moved the goal-post again. Now they're saying Obama doesn't deserve the credit just because he's the President. However, the same faux news crowd continues to blame Bill Clinton for 911.

I don't blame Clinton for 9/11, just as I don't give Obama all this glory for the death of Bin Laden. Bin Laden is responsible for 9/11 and Navy SEALs ventilated Bin Laden.

Does anyone know what will be done with Bin Laden's remains? If he's buried in the USA, I may have to visit his grave with a full bladder and a package of raw bacon. Good riddance to that scumbag.

This is very good news for the nation. But it is very bad news for Republicans/Tea Partiers. This bit of news, really demonstrates the competency of this president and adds to his political capital. Perhaps this is just enough to move the nation past the Republican/Tea Party silliness we have seen these last few years.

I think this incident makes it much less likely that Republicans/Tea Partiers in Congress will feel strong enough to play Chicken with the national debt ceiling. And I think this is going to make the chances of a Republican in the White House in 2012 much less likely. I am sure there are a lot of Republicans/Tea Partiers waking up with a huge headache today.

But the bottom line is Bin Ladin's death is very good news for the world. The world is a little bit safer now that he is gone.

The Tea Party crowd is a fiscal group concerned with government spending, so the catch on Obama's watch won't change the dollars and cents so the Tea Party folk will have the same grievances, but it will be a feather in his cap...if you can navigate through all the doubts being voiced over Obama's capture and death.

The Mission was to kill, not capture, OBL.

(Reuters) - The U.S. special forces team that hunted down Osama bin Laden was under orders to kill the al Qaeda mastermind, not capture him, a U.S. national security official told Reuters.

"This was a kill operation," the official said, making clear there was no desire to try to capture bin Laden alive in Pakistan.

Given that we have killed Bin Ladin and taken over his headquarters, I imagine we are also reaping a huge intelligence harvest from the Bin Ladin compound.

I imagine that terrorists around the world are smart enough to figure that out and will be running for deep cover in the days to come.

That's a good guess. But will they stay in the deep cover? I hope they do, but suspect that they won't.

You don't think a major government building where international ceremonies are routinely held would not have an entire warehouse full of flags in the basement?

So wait a minute, are you saying that the WH went through their xmas decoration and US flag box stored in the basement to provide the crowed outside its gates with flags? Seriously?:D

That's more 'fishy' than burial at sea.

FraggleRocker: BTW, turbans are not made out of towels. They're made out of little sheets. So we're not supposed to call them "towel heads."

So be it. We'll just more appropriately call them 'sheet-heads'.

CAIRO — Muslim clerics said Monday that Osama bin Laden's burial at sea was a violation of Islamic tradition that may further provoke militant calls for revenge attacks against American targets. According to Islamic teachings, the highest honor to be bestowed on the dead is giving the deceased a swift burial, preferably before sunset. Those who die while traveling at sea can have their bodies committed to the bottom of the ocean if they are far off the coast, according to Islamic tradition.

"They can say they buried him at sea, but they cannot say they did it according to Islam," Mohammed al-Qubaisi, Dubai's grand mufti, said about bin Laden's burial. "If the family does not want him, it's really simple in Islam: You dig up a grave anywhere, even on a remote island, you say the prayers and that's it."

"Sea burials are permissible for Muslims in extraordinary circumstances," he added. "This is not one of them."

But Mohammed Qudah, a professor of Islamic law at the University of Jordan, said burying the Saudi-born bin Laden at sea was not forbidden if there was nobody to receive the body and provide a Muslim burial.

"The land and the sea belong to God, who is able to protect and raise the dead at the end of times for Judgment Day," he said. "It's neither true nor correct to claim that there was nobody in the Muslim world ready to receive Bin Laden's body."

Clerics in Iraq – where an offshoot of al-Qaida is blamed for the death of thousands of people since 2003 – also criticized the U.S. action. One said it only benefited fish.

"If a man dies on a ship that is a long distance from land, then the dead man should be buried at the sea," said Shiite cleric Ibrahim al-Jabari. "But if he dies on land, then he should be buried in the ground, not to be thrown into the sea. Otherwise, this would be only inviting fish to a banquet."

Gotta love the clerics! Inviting fish to a banquet indeed!

Why would the Americans go to ANY trouble to give Bin Laden a muslim burial? The whole point is to smear the symbolic memory and show the LEAST amount of reverence.

It's not that President Obama did what Bush couldn't do;
It's that it took 10 years of dedicated American soldiering,
which Obama helped by keeping Bush's SecDef Robert Gates.

The Americans are not displaying "hatred and vitriol" as terrorists do;
They're happily rejoicing in "good" ultimately triumphing over "evil".
Look at the photos and videos again: happy faces and happy voices.

America quickly buried OBL's remains at sea. This is a mixed bag.
Without blatant/bodily evidence, conspiracy rumors will persist,
and I would like to see lots of photos and videos of OBL's body.

The sea burial shows that America respects the beliefs of others,
over desecrating corpses, which would have only provoked terrorists,
while preventing him from being enshrined/martyred by his followers.

The underlying cause of the global terrorism - American (and/or Corporate Transnational?) (neo?) Imperialism remains.

Violence, death and destruction that comes down a hierarchical ladder is largely unnoticed by the mob. Who really cares about those millions of the dead mud, desert & jungle dwellers around the world, courtesy of US military & US government. However, when violence, death and destruction comes up a hierarchical pecking order (like in September 11) mobs are getting excited (and bloodthirsty). Nothing but disgusting.

That's a bunch of nonsense. We did not cause Islamic jihad.

...I would like to think that upon his death, he was tried at the hand of God and found to be Guilty for all the incredible atrocities and terrible abominations against mankind he has wrought upon this world. I would like to think that God has a special punishment for people like Osama, who twist the minds of their countrymen, even children, so that they mindlessly take up arms against any enemy they don't even know......

That's the same mentality that the jihadists enjoy, everyone likes to think god is on their side, but the forces of a secular nation were his downfall, no god required.
