Nipple hair?

I have nipple hair, and my girlfriend has some too (not as much as I do). I know it's normal, and I honestly don't care about it, but I'm curious as to the benefit it has to evolution. What's the purpose of nipple hair? I can't see it protecting the nipple seeing as how it looks. I also can't see it keep the nipple area warm.

Soo...any ideas?

As humans evoloved the hair has been receding more and more. At one time hair was needed to protect from very cold conditions to help keep them warm. What little hair most of us have today will probably be even less in another 500 years if the weather gets warmer. Weather is a big factor as well as genetics.

genital and nipple hair probably evolved as signs of sexual maturity. Lack of hair is for sweating - which allowed humans to stay cool while running down very large prey - which has to pant and cool via it's tongue (we do not pant).
- so, the first is sexual selection.
- the later natural survivability.

The original "nipple" was no nipple, but just hair.

So the better question would be what the function is of the nipple. It replaced the function of hair in the nipple area - Guiding the milk flow.

LOL!! And there were originally no belly buttons either I suppose. It just came around as an alternative source of foreplay -Guiding the....OK OK, I'll stop.

OK, so you had me curious. I went a googling and what not and now I can't find the site I was at. Several suggestions were that it had to do with lubrication, that we were hairy everywhere at one time and it's just one place it hasn't left yet due to hormones and sexual factors. The one I liked the best was that it had to do with olifactory type of thing. That it produced scents that guided infants towards the source of food. Although that doesn't explain it on the males.

The purpose is to act like a kind of linear ball bearing and reduce friction. The nipple is obviously a sensitive organ that could get chafed.

Nipples are already useless, beyond sexual stimulation for some, on males anyway. They probably have hair around them for the same reason that they even have nipples in the first place. The whole all males begin as female explanation.

.

Are you a Ken doll? Birth defect? Surgically removed? My grandmother doesn't have a bellybutton because it was removed.

none of that, and what's "ken doll"

wait, maybe i miss understood the word nipple hair, nipple hair on the neck right?
