Wow, exciting times eh?
Just somehow, I don't think your posts are going to get up to 20.

Not the best reply to a post about innocent people's lives being in danger, Sam. Care to elaborate?

Thats all we know. The hostages from the Oberoi just walked out. There were about 40 people held hostage in 3 locations, Oberoi, Taj and Nariman House. The Nariman house group is probably the one that fired on the people in Cafe Leopold [which is nearby] and then holed up there. Don't have any more info yet. According to some neighbors there are Israelis living in Nariman House.

Not necessarily. India is a popular destination for Israelis [their popularity with the locals is a bit more suspect]. There are parts of India where they have formed mini Israeli communities where the IDF comes after a tour of duty to wind down. All the locals there speak Hebrew and sell food and stuff that is familiar to Israelis. Even the road signs are in Hebrew, its like a refugee community. :)

If there are Jews in Nariman House, they probably provide a stopover for Israelis who come into Bombay.

Sam.
You seem to be very confused recently.

Why not discuss the issue?
Your usual input is that people should not overly criticise an atrocity because they do not attack Bushists when they commit other atrocities in the name of democracy and freedom.

Well. There are other people who attack both sets of criminals.
And I would hope that you are among them.

Are you in absolute opposition to this evil attack, or not.
No Weasleling.

Ah we've had terrorist attacks for over two decades in India. Its no more than the gang shootings or other general criminal activity that happens on a dialy basis. Whats to discuss? We don't know who the people are or why they did it. They are criminals, regardless, our CID has gone down the drain since the SS came to power and the cops are undertrained, underarmed and underprepared. There are cops who live near my dad's clinic and according to my dad they are all very very poor people who do it as a job and find it so harrowing that many have severe problems with alcoholism. Corruption is paramount. Its good they were able to bring in the army so soon. But if you've seen the news coverage, its pretty much pointless unless there is a complete revamping of the city's police and anti-terrorism unit.

For Mumbaikars, its just another day. No matter what happens, we try to live as usual.

I'm glad to hear that Sam's family are all right. I only hope the terrorists can be quickly and efficiently dispatched, and the hostages returned safely.

Is there bad feelings towards the Israeli tourists in that area? Or do you think these attackers were just outsiders using this area to "stir up the pot" ?

There's a map posted earlier...where do you live on it Sam?

Yeah, it was odd to hear of old and familiar haunts being targeted. The place targeted in Vile Parle is close to where my aunt used to work before she retired last month. The Colaba places are where we used to hang out after college. We're still not certain if anyone we knew was in the Taj or Oberoi or the Cafe Leo. We're calling all the people and sending emails to make sure everyone we can think of who might be there is still okay. The Taj Sea Lounge was a favorite hangout of my brothers and his friends may have been there.

Nobody cares in Mumbai [about Israelis or whatever]. According to pics of the terrorists on Indian news, they are fair and tall and could be North Indian or Pakistanis. If they are targeting British and Americans [and Israelis] it may just be to get more attention from the western press. Certainly, there has been more coverage of this attack than the seven bombs in 2006 that blew up a suburban train. So if their intent was to get more coverage from western press, they succeeded. Which means, of course, that future attacks will focus on westerners in India.

Sounds like your right, Sam....it's all over the news now. I wonder what message they were trying to send?

Well, according to the Indian analysts on the Indian media, they think that it could be one of several things. They've dismissed the Deccan mujahideen who claimed responsibility because its an unknown outfit and has no known infrastructure capable of carrying out something with this magnitude of organisation. Looking at the big picture [attacks on major commercial centers in India, Bnagalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad] over the past two years, they suggest that these are the places that have the maximum amount of foreign investment from the US and EU. This month, secret EU-India trade talks were held in New Delhi and Mumbai to expand free trade agreements which would impact 90% of the Indian people [negatively, in the way that structural adjustment policies through the WTO and IMF always do, but with a tremendous increase in foreign investment in India].

So, in their opinion, with this background and the fact that they are targeting westerners, it looks like an attempt to undermine foreign investment in India. Of course, they are assuming that the CBI and National Security and ATS are on their toes, which is rather optimistic of them.

In my own opinion, its not a random attack and its not by some unknown or fringe group. The fact that India's growing economy is the second fastest after China [and with a greater potential for development through infrastructure and technological progress] cannot be something that our neighbors will look on with ease. The creation of pseudo front groups [like Indian mujahideen, Deccan mujahideen, etc] to create the impression of international/internal destabilisation will not really work with Indian policy makers, because they don't think that way. Indians are pragmatic, its always about the money. :p

Thanks for your response Sam.

See guys! You can get a straight answer outta Sam. :)

Nariman House is a Chabad house? Interesting, I did not know they had one in Bombay.

Oh... ok...thanks.

I think if MORE people smoked pot..we wouldn't have this problem. :) Stoners are just to lazy to get up and take people hostage...especially when sponge bob is on.
