There was a paper in JSTOR, I'll try to dig up the reference. Apparently, the idol worshippers in Mecca may have been Christians with icons, not polythiests. That sounds more likely considering Arab trade in the region was at its peak before the Persians took their trade routes.

I hope they start doing archaeological expeditions soon, I'm sure there's lots of exciting stuff in the sands :D

True. If they have sex before being married either of them who is having sex with a minor (which could be both of them is they are both young) could get statutory rape or other minor corruption charges. However, once they are married they are both defacto adults able to have sex and enter into contracts, etc.

Some states have youth sex laws, like in Texas if you are within 2 years of each other's age and both over 16 you can legally have sex. But once the marriage papers are signed there is no upper age requirements. If you are gal and 12 and have your parent's consent you can marry any guy 14 - 17 with parent's consent or 18 - 114 if he says yes. Once you are married you can bionk like a porn star and no one can say boo about it legally. Well unless you take pictures of your self naked in which case you could be arrested for child pornography. (yes a minor was recently arrested for taking pictures of herself naked.)

I realize a lot of you are having your personal sensibilities challenged, but these are the laws of the land in the US. You have to remember in the puritan mindset ANYTHING that gets people married is better than sex out of wedlock and "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" is how these laws got made.

It sounds reasonable, but there's also evidence that Mecca, similar to cities in the Bible, didn't exist at the time they were suppose to.

So, yes, I hope they start the archeology as well :)

Not any more, even with marrage, sex with a minor is a Felony.

No the laws have changed in the last decades, sex with minors is Illegall as hell, and 15 will get you 20.

It doesn't matter if you are married, if you are 18 and over, and they are 16, and you get caught, just sign up for the sex offenders regestration, you will go to jail.

Mohammad was not acting in any way that was any different than any of the other Arabs. He was a religious leader with that came power and status and thus he had the largest Harem - something uncivilized nomads respect very much. "He da man" "He got da bitches"

Lots of mammals do this, big cats, monkeys, people.... I think the closer you are to living hand to mouth the more this sort of behavior is not only tolerated but EXPECTED from the other animals. It's really only after long term civilization that people begin to act differently.

Old enough to bleed = Old enough to breed.

So, think about that, because that's the way it is in the animal kingdom and that's the way it was back in the day.

Actually at this point he was kind of a nobody. He married her before making it big as I recall. But again I don't claim expertise here. No doubt he could have had "the largest harem" after he came into power, but he didn't.

If you are married, you can have sex with your spouse no matter the respective ages even if Buffalo Roam is offended. That is part of what being married means.

If you aren't married there are other laws, that you site, which govern when you can start having sex, but those don't apply to married couples.

There is no law in the US that attempts to restrict a married couple having sex. If they tried to make one the courts would throw it out in a heartbeat.
