I was watching a program on discovery channel about the enhancement of the human species through nanotech and brain-machine interface. Several of the scientists interviewed discussed the possibility of flooding a human brain with nanobots which would:
a. Enhance the brain's natural functions, for whatever purpose.
b. Eventually, it would be possible for the nanobots to observe the neurons, learn their functions, kill them, and take their place, over a certain period of time. Given that scientists now believe that the cells in the brain die and are replaced, like all other cells in the body, this would be like a permanent replacement. The (now fully mechanical) brain could then be removed from the body and placed in a prosthetic body, or in some kind of simulated world, etc...
What do you think of this?
