Before we start, a few rules:

For a general idea of how the game works, see the first post in the sign-up thread, [thread=84420]here[/thread].

1. I will assign roles and post them publicly here. If you are Mafia, I will PM you to let you know the entire list of Mafia members.
2. During the DAY you can vote for a player that you think should be arrested. Votes must be on a separate line in bold, or they won't be counted. Write something like "Vote: Asguard" or "Vote: Policeman". If you want to change your vote before the end of the day, it would be useful if you would also "unvote" your previous vote (e.g. "Unvote: Asguard, Vote: Challenger78").
3. When the DAY ends, the player with the most votes is arrested. I will reveal whether they were Mafia or not, and the game will move into NIGHT.
4. During the NIGHT, mafia members can vote for a player that you want to kill. Votes must be sent to the moderator (me) by PM. You can, of course, discuss your vote with other mafia members. If you want to change your vote before the end of the night, it would be useful if you would also "unvote" your previous vote in your PM (e.g. "Unvote: Asguard, Vote: Challenger78").
5. During the NIGHT, players other than Mafia must not communicate in any way. That means no posting in the game thread, and no talking about the game outside the thread (by PM or in any other thread or in any other way).
6. Do not talk to other players, dead or alive, about the game outside of the game thread, unless you are Mafia, in which case you can talk to other Mafia members by PM, but only at NIGHT.
7. Once dead, stop posting until the game is over. A single "Damn! I was killed/arrested" kind of post is ok, but you must not reveal anything you know to anybody after you're killed/arrested. Dead is dead. No cheating, please.
8. If you have any questions, please PM me, or post them in the thread. The moderator's decisions about rules that are unspecified at the start or otherwise contentious is final.
9. Try to post at least once every 24 hours. If you go inactive for a long period of time, another person may be assigned to take your role, and/or you may be arbitrarily "killed" by the moderator.
10. Do not quote any PM you receive from the moderator or other players (or even fake that you have received such a PM). If you do this, you may be arbitrarily "killed" by the moderator.
11. Please don't cheat - it will spoil the game for everybody.
12. Have fun!
13. If there's anything else I'll add it as we go.

Special abilities of various roles:

a. The Police Officer can optionally send a PM to the moderator (me) once each day, naming somebody they wish to investigate. I will tell the Policeman (by PM) for sure whether the investigated person is Mafia or not. (It is up to the Police Officer how he or she uses this information.)

b. The Travel Agent can nominate one person each day to take a trip out of town, meaning that they cannot be killed by the Mafia that night. The travel agent can do this by posting on a separate line in bold in a post "Travel voucher: Asguard". You can change your mind, but if you do, make it clear you're changing (e.g. "Voucher revoked: Asguard. Travel Voucher: Challenger78").

c. The Doctor can choose to "save" two people over the entire course of the game. After a death is announced in the morning, the Doctor can optionally use one of his or her two "saves" to stop the person who would otherwise have been killed from being eliminated from the game. The Doctor can do this by posting in bold on a separate line in the thread "Emergency surgery on Asguard". Do this after the death announcement is made.

d. The Lawyer can prevent the arrest of two people over the entire course of the game. To do this, wait until after the arrest is announced by the moderator, then post in bold on a separate line "Legal representation for Asguard", or something similar (get out of jail free?).

e. The Mayor can choose twice during the entire game to reappoint a player in any of the other roles listed above. For example, the Mayor might choose to appoint a different person as the policeman, thus removing the original policeman's powers and given them to somebody else. Do this by posting in the thread on a separate line in bold "Reappointment: Asguard is the new Lawyer". The old Lawyer, in that case, then takes on whatever role Asguard had before. Note: the change in role means that the players exchange all powers associated with their roles, too. However, it does NOT change the players' status as mafia or innocents.

f. The Casino Owner can choose to observe one player on CCTV for one day and night. Post in bold "CCTV: Asgaurd". The observed player's vote on that day and night (if Mafia) does not count.

g. The Entertainer has a very high profile. As such, it is difficult for the police to arrest him, and since he is surrounded by people all the time it is difficult for the Mafia to carry out a "hit". On days 2, 3 and 4, the Entertainer is immune (i.e. cannot be arrested or killed by the Mafia).

h. Once each day, the Barman can find out who either the Police Officer or the Private Investigator (but not both) has asked about that day. To do this, send a PM to the moderator nominating who you want to know about.

i. It is dangerous to attack or try to arrest the Gun Shop Proprietor. When the Gun Shop Proprietor is arrested or killed, he can choose one other player to die. (This will be handled by by with the moderator if the need arises.)

j. The Taxi driver, the Town Gossip and the Village Idiot all have some access to information (this will be given by PM to each of them by the moderator at certain times of the game). The information they have may not be totally reliable, however. (Reliability will be specified when information is given.) They can publicise the information they get or keep it to themselves.

k. The Bodyguard is a somewhat mysterious figure. His job is ostensibly to protect the Casino owner, but he will be given some private information by the moderator, too. The Bodyguard has no special information prior to Day 3.

l. The Private Investigator can optionally send a PM to the moderator (me) once each day, naming somebody they wish to investigate. I will tell the PI (by PM) for sure whether the investigated person is Mafia or not. (It is up to the PI.) The PI has no special power prior to Day 3.

m. The Newspaper Editor can sway public opinion. Once only during the game, after the arrest vote is decided, the Editor can choose to unilaterally change the vote - i.e. the Editor alone gets to decide who is arrested that day.

Mafia - Day 1

The sleepy town of Plazmaville was once a good place to live. Folks were friendly - people you could trust. But recently, things have changed.

Maybe it all started when the Casino opened. The big shot Casino Owner moved into town and set up shop. Then the riff-raff started coming in. The town Gossip, always one with an ear to the ground, heard rumours that the Mafia were using the casino as a money laundering operation. The fear that Plazmaville might be turning into a den of iniquity spread through the peaceful townfolk. Their fears seemed at least partially justified when a new gun shop opened on Main Street. Such a thing was unheard of before the casino opened; though it may be that there is no connection between the two...

It's not all bad. An influx of people to the casino has meant that business has picked up in Plazmaville. The casino has attracted a famous Celebrity, who is renting a permanent suite of rooms in the casino penthouse, and who entertains the townsfolk each night. So, the townies roll up to watch the big star, and to drink at the bar, where the Bartender is always ready to talk over a beverage or three - just don't pry into the Bartender's life too much. If you get too drunk to drive home, you can always ask the Taxi Driver to take you. Some say the driver is a little strange - some say suspicious even - but the Driver is probably just trying to make a living one way or another, just like everybody else.

The Mayor seems to have retained the confidence of the people of Plazmaville, up to now anyway. He makes sure that the Village Idiot doesn't disturb visitors to the town too much with his ravings and other antics. And he keeps an eye on town's one and only Police Officer, to make sure he doesn't abuse his powers. The Gossip thinks that the Police Officer is not above suspicion in some of the shady dealings that may be happening in town. But then, the Gossip doesn't even trust the Mayor!

The town Lawyer has seen plenty of work lately. Some guys from the Big Smoke came out to the Casino following major crime leads, or so they said, but the lawyer was hired to make sure that the Casino Owner's rights were protected. The FBI didn't find anything - some think they didn't have enough evidence to get the required warrants.

The Taxi driver and the Village Idiot, who are often wandering the town at night, have seen some big black cars cruising the town at some odd times of night. Neither of them thought much of it. Until yesterday.

Yesterday, the body of the town's respected and elderly bank manager was discovered stuffed into an over-full garbage skip in an alley not far from the casino. The town Doctor was called, but the banker was clearly dead - shot once in the head and twice in the chest. The Doctor is a world expert in treating gunshot wounds, but in this case it was far too late.

The townspeople are scared now. A vague sense of unease has turned into a more definite fear. Business at the local Travel Agency has picked up, as more people decide that now might be a good time for a vacation. Some have left town permanently.

The Mayor has assured the townsfolk that the Police Officer will investigate this killing thoroughly. In fact, it has been announced that one person will be arrested each day until crime in this town is stopped once and for all.

Despite these assurances, though, the people are still nervous. Maybe there are those among them who are not what they seem...

Additional information on day 1:

Immediately following the discovery of the bank manager's body, the Casino Owner decided to take out a little insurance. As a result, he hired a big, beefy, Bodyguard to protect his interests. The Bodyguard is from out of town, and looks mean.

Almost by chance, a Private Investigator was in Plazmaville when the body was discovered. His interest was sparked, so he decided to stick around for a while...

This morning's edition of the Plazma Times, published by the Editor, had the murder on the front page. Such a crime was unheard of in Plazmaville before the casino opened, and the editorial expresses the town's outrage and its determination to find the killer or killers.

It is now DAYTIME, Day 1.

Players who are members of the Mafia should have received a PM from me by now (all players, please check your personal messages).

If you have NOT received a private message from me, you are NOT Mafia - you are innocent and your aim is to ensure that all Mafia members are arrested before you are all killed.

There are currently five Mafia among you.

Reminder: ALL discussion about the gameplay must take place publicly in this thread. Please do NOT send PMs to other players to exchange information about the game. Only the Mafia can talk by PM, and then only at NIGHT (which means not now, since it is DAY).

You can vote to arrest any player at any time by posting a line like this, in bold:

Vote: Norsefire

You can change your vote as many times as you like during the day. If you want to change your vote from Norsefire to S.A.M., for example, write:

Unvote: Norsefire. Vote: SAM

I will let you know when NIGHT is coming. Day 1 will last at least 3 hours from the time on this post. Then, I will see how many people have voted and decide whether Day 1 will continue.

Check the very first post of this thread to see what your assigned role is. I will update that post to let you know who is still alive and who is dead at all times.

Good luck.

It's always the bartender... inzomnia watch yourself
Come to think of it I don't trust the casino owner either... steve100 keep a steady watch as well...

Note: the Doctor, the Lawyer, the Travel Agent and the Editor cannot use their "powers" to save themselves - only for the benefit of other people.

The heat was stifling in the travel agency. Sweat poured from S.A.M.'s greasy pores and he pulled at the sticky shirt clinging to his body, the noisy drone of the ancient airconditioner the only sign that it existed. Slumping low in his chair, he shifted uneasily, considering his options. He picked up the post-it on which he had written the name of the town member who wanted an instant ticket out of town. Then as though arriving at a decision, he heaved himself out of his chair and shuffled over to the store window, peering over the half curtain at the casino opposite. The beefy bodyguard was leaning against the wall and slowly turned his head to look at S.A.M. as though he had sensed the fat little man watching him. It was as if unspoken message passed between the two and S.A.M. jerked back uneasily. Moving rapidly towards his desk, he picked up the phone and started dialing...

Skaught stands mysteriously outside the casino door. Everybody is a potential threat to him. "Any one of these crazy bastards could be hired to take out the boss of the casino." He thinks to himself. "I have to watch everyone and trust no one. Any mutha fucka gets crazy in here, they'll have my ass to deal with." He sighs with a confident shrug of his shoulders.

Like, oh my god, I totally heard that you were a mafioso! Hahaha i'm, like, just kidding SAM you've always been like, my favorite :)

Ok I reread this post and I never want to hear myself talk like that^ again

What you wanna me to go outta town so's you can take out my boss is that it?

just then, unixgeek13, the local cop, walked defiantly out into the daylight... committed to cleaning up this town!

Sheriff Unixgeek13 is wondering what is on people's minds....

maybe I'll stop by the gun shop and amp up my firepower.

S.A.M. hurriedly walked over to the window again, the bodyguard was gone and a valleygirl, the town gossip, was making gooey eyes at the cop, who was strutting around her like a peacock. "No wonder this town is going to teh dogs", he muttered. With a disgusted snort, he turned away and pulling his hat off the stand, jammed it low on his head. Moving furtively towards the back of the shop, he opened a door in the dark corner and ran down the alley where the body had been found...

the cop is sitting on a bench in the center of town wondering who he can screw with today. messing with somebody's head is a great cure for boredom!
