Machine Vision Heads for the Third Dimension
From ExtremeTech:
A San Jose startup has patented and tested a practical process for allowing machines to see and recognize three-dimensional objects.
Canesta Inc.'s Electronic Perception Technology is a form of machine vision, a technology that gives a semiconductor or system the ability not only to record the image of an object, but to be able to distinguish the object from the background or from other objects in a scene. Canesta's technology takes machine vision to the third dimension by adding a form of depth perception. The technology uses an approach similar to radar, where waves of emitted energy are bounced off an object.
The company sees this as a fundamental technology which can be applied to a variety of applications. "Any devices which we can give sight to will enhance the quality of life," van Burden said.
