Keratinisation.

In human skin, as the cells from the Basal layer gradually move toward the surface, they become increasingly Keratinised, untill at the cornified layer of the Epidermis they are flattened and completely Keratinised.
My question is this: what exactly happens to the Cytoplasm, and cellular structures, Nucleus, Ribosomes, Mitochondria etc... as the cells become more and more keratinised?

All I know is that they die off after so much pancakeification. Perhaps this is a gradual degeneration process as it moves up through dermis.
