Islam and the Bomb

I've read that a number of Islamic scholars believe the creation and possession of nuclear bombs would be against Islamic law.

Why? What's the argument in Islam against nukes? And are there any scholars who argue that the nuke fits in with Islamic law?

Perhaps someone with knowledge of the argument could fill me in, I've been curious for a while!

I don't know. I'm totally ignorant on the subject. I've heard it mentioned 4-6 times recently on the Economist, Al-Jazeera and the NYTimes. I asked here because I figured someone must know more than me!

I think the talk about it came from the statements of certain Iranians. Though I'm aware that Iranian leaders do not exactly represent the highest authority in Islam.

Seems more like a personal opinion than anything else.

Well, yes, as are most opinions.

My question is what is the theological basis for such an opinion. If you don't know, then I guess I'll just have to hope that someone else does.
