Is the concept of god/afterlife parochial or universal?

My gut would say universal... as any "intelligent" creature would want to try and explain any star giving off light (like our sun) before the advent of science... i would therefore assume that by the time science "evolved" a belief in "god" or an "afterlife" would already be prevelant.
