Is immigration ruining America?

A US census report states that by 2050, the percentage of whites in the USA will decrease to less than 50% of the population due to legal and illegal immigration.

I don't know about all of you, but it feels to me like American culture is slowly slipping away due to the changing demographic that reflects all the aliens who really have no sense of what this country is about crawling over the border. Will these people really have any respect for our laws or what the founders of the country stood for? Do they really care now?

Although it is bloody, whites have a long history in this country. Whites founded this country. We designed it and built it. Whites shouldn't feel "lucky" to be here... we were BORN here.

What are all your thoughts on this?

NOTE: This is not supposed to be a non-white bashing thread. It's about the face of this country changing into something that will no longer resemble what it originally was. Let us talk about that.

Hilarious. "/

You're bound to get many shouts of 'racist!' thrown at you during the course of this thread. However, I think you raise a valid point.

Do we see this same diversity of race in Asia or Africa? Would millions of whites be welcomed into these countries in the same way we are expected to welcome them?

I beg your pardon. Since WHEN was American culture exclusively white?

I'll be sure to tell my mother her non-white children were not born her. I guess I'm supposed to feel lucky to be here because I'm mixed? Or should I just feel 1/4 lucky?

I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was ever meant to be exclusively white. I missed that in the Constitution.

the u.s has always had immigration. i wasnt born in u.s but came here at 3 years old.

There has always been immigration. But most of the previous waves of immigration in the USA have all come from the same continent, from countries with similar cultures and similar people. It also didn't take place at the magnitude it is happening now from Mexico, with so many non english speaking ignorant illegals.

It was never exclusively white. But for a very long time it was *almost* exclusively white. It remained predominantly white up until the latter half of the 20th century. You can say it was never exclusively white... but for better or worse, it has always been predominantly so. That very well may change by 2050. And whites in America really do or at least did have a culture unto their own, that was distinct from the cultures of immigrants. This thread is about whether the transformation of that culture -- which is surely taking place -- is a good or bad thing.

This isn't purely about whiteness. It's about American identity changing with this huge tidal wave of people who come here without having any respect for our laws and customs. It's about people who come here waving the flags of their old country and descrating the flag of the country that they decided to sponge off of. It's about people who don't know the story of this country and see nothing but personal opportunity and greed for themselves.

I wish you could see that, I really do.

First of all, I know the story.

Second of all, I understand illegal immigrants are burdensome on the tax payers, but can we save the faux patriotism for the Fox News Boards?

Things change, culturally. Get over it. There's still plenty of white culture. So whites aren't the dominant paradigm anymore, or might not be. The world will still turn. Universities will not be burned to the ground.

Why should these immigrants be any different than the Germans, Irish, and Italians who came between 1800 and 1920? The illegal vs legal issue does not affect the fact that these new immigrants are coming for the same reasons and with the same attitudes that the previous immigrants came.

Immigrants want their children to have better possibilities than they would have in their home countries and immigrants are willing to take whatever risks are necessary and work as hard as necessary to make that dream reality. Immigrants love America because in America their dreams are more likely to come true. These things were true about immigrants in 1850 and they are true today.

Rather than making America less American I feel these immigrants are maintaining America's Americanness by preserving the recklessly optimistic "can do" attitude of immigrants which has been the most unique and distinguishing feature of the USA's culture for the last 300 years.

The most apple pie and baseball all American family I ever knew had both parents grow up in in Taiwan.

On the cultural side I have no fear of immigrants. Even the children of the huge Mexican neighborhoods do assimilate; just not as quickly. The grandchildren will marry people of other ethnicities. They are and will be Americans.

On the economic side I do feel that the combination of US trade policy and excess immigration will destroy American culture and the American quality of life by destroying the American middle class. Why hire an American born person when somebody else will do the same work cheaper and be more grateful for the salary they receive? We understand this reality for the uneducated Americans and some say "tough luck to the uneducated Americans, they should have got an education and I want my cheap labor and my cheap products made by cheap labor". But this problem of cheaper labor driving down wages will increasingly spread to the jobs that people with advanced degrees have or hope to have.

Also the unskilled American born who's job is taken by immigrants becomes a burden for the society in general. I see no reason why the USA needs Punjabi people to collect tolls on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. I love Punjabi people but there is a crime ridden ghetto filled with unemployed American born people who need jobs 10 minutes away from the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. I think maybe the legal immigration also should be shut down until the labor market tightens up.

Warren Buffet saw the problem of American trade policy and proposed a solution that would keep the benefits of "comparative advantage" while protecting American workers from the inevitable destruction of the American middle class that will happen if the policies of the last 30 years are allowed to continue for the next 30 years. Buffet's solution: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2003/11/10/352872/index.htm

It would not be hard to stop illegal immigration if the USA wanted to stop illegal immigration. It would require some more loss of privacy but who care our privacy is already gone. It would also require hurting the employers of illegal immigrants but I will have not sympathy for them. Buffet's trade policy modification had better be in place before a real crack down on illegal immigration takes place because much of US agriculture would pack up and leave the USA if a crack down on illegal immigration happened prior to enacting Buffet's trade policy.

We have all this illegal immigration because our politicians covertly approve of illegal immigration because our politicians are closer socially to the employers of illegal immigrants than they are to the people who want the illegal immigration stopped.

Don't blame the immigrants. It can't be wrong to want a better life for your family. Blame their employers and the politicians who serve their employers.

Saven, don't be confused by my Indian name. I am from 30% English who came to USA before 1700 and 70% German, Swedish and Dutch who came over to the USA before 1900. Let the whitness thing go. We don't need it.

Originally? Are you proposing a return to slavery and the Three-Fifths Rule? Should we take the vote away from women?

Although it is bloody, whites have a long history in this country. Whites founded this country. We designed it and built it. Whites shouldn't feel "lucky" to be here... we were BORN here.

Whites designed and built it? So all those black slaves, then ... what the hell were they doing? And the imported Chinese laborers who built the railroads in the West?

Work in the beginning was slow and difficult. After the first 23 miles, Central Pacific faced the daunting task of laying tracks over terrain that rose 7,000 feet in 100 miles. To conquer the many sheer embankments, the Chinese workers used techniques they had learned in China to complete similar tasks. They were lowered by ropes from the top of cliffs in baskets, and while suspended, they chipped away at the granite and planted explosives that were used to blast tunnels. Many workers risked their lives and perished in the harsh winters and dangerous conditions.

By the summer of 1868, 4,000 workers, two thirds of which were Chinese, had built the transcontinental railroad over the Sierras and into the interior plains. On May 10, 1869, the two railroads were to meet at Promontory, Utah in front of a cheering crowd and a band. A Chinese [and Irish] crew was chosen to lay the final ten miles of track, and it was completed in only twelve hours.

Without the efforts of the Chinese workers in the building of America's railroads, our development and progress as a nation would have been delayed by years. Their toil in severe weather, cruel working conditions and for meager wages cannot be under appreciated. My sentiments and thanks go out to the entire Chinese-American community for its ancestors' contribution to the building of this great Nation.

And born here? So what, then, is your opinion of a situation derisively described as "anchor babies"? They, too, are born here.

The broader reality is that American culture is not static. It never has been. Consider the struggle in colonial Maryland for religious toleration. Not only does it provide high drama between Protestants and Catholics, but by the time of the Constitution, the culture had already changed. The First Amendment includes Jews. The Act Concerning Religion did not.

I think the thread starter is just trolling, the premise is so stupid there is not other explanation.

But weren't the Mexicans were already here? Weren't they living in the areas we call California, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas.

I believe technically those folks would have been considered imperialist white boys who happened to be from Spain rather than, say, England or France, and merely crushed other "native Americans" underfoot than did their aforementioned European fellows.
