I don't know about all of you, but it feels to me like American culture is slowly slipping away due to the changing demographic that reflects all the aliens who really have no sense of what this country is about crawling over the border. Will these people really have any respect for our laws or what the founders of the country stood for? Do they really care now?
Why should these immigrants be any different than the Germans, Irish, and Italians who came between 1800 and 1920? The illegal vs legal issue does not affect the fact that these new immigrants are coming for the same reasons and with the same attitudes that the previous immigrants came.
Immigrants want their children to have better possibilities than they would have in their home countries and immigrants are willing to take whatever risks are necessary and work as hard as necessary to make that dream reality. Immigrants love America because in America their dreams are more likely to come true. These things were true about immigrants in 1850 and they are true today.
Rather than making America less American I feel these immigrants are maintaining America's Americanness by preserving the recklessly optimistic "can do" attitude of immigrants which has been the most unique and distinguishing feature of the USA's culture for the last 300 years.
The most apple pie and baseball all American family I ever knew had both parents grow up in in Taiwan.
On the cultural side I have no fear of immigrants. Even the children of the huge Mexican neighborhoods do assimilate; just not as quickly. The grandchildren will marry people of other ethnicities. They are and will be Americans.
On the economic side I do feel that the combination of US trade policy and excess immigration will destroy American culture and the American quality of life by destroying the American middle class. Why hire an American born person when somebody else will do the same work cheaper and be more grateful for the salary they receive? We understand this reality for the uneducated Americans and some say "tough luck to the uneducated Americans, they should have got an education and I want my cheap labor and my cheap products made by cheap labor". But this problem of cheaper labor driving down wages will increasingly spread to the jobs that people with advanced degrees have or hope to have.
Also the unskilled American born who's job is taken by immigrants becomes a burden for the society in general. I see no reason why the USA needs Punjabi people to collect tolls on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. I love Punjabi people but there is a crime ridden ghetto filled with unemployed American born people who need jobs 10 minutes away from the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. I think maybe the legal immigration also should be shut down until the labor market tightens up.
Warren Buffet saw the problem of American trade policy and proposed a solution that would keep the benefits of "comparative advantage" while protecting American workers from the inevitable destruction of the American middle class that will happen if the policies of the last 30 years are allowed to continue for the next 30 years. Buffet's solution:

It would not be hard to stop illegal immigration if the USA wanted to stop illegal immigration. It would require some more loss of privacy but who care our privacy is already gone. It would also require hurting the employers of illegal immigrants but I will have not sympathy for them. Buffet's trade policy modification had better be in place before a real crack down on illegal immigration takes place because much of US agriculture would pack up and leave the USA if a crack down on illegal immigration happened prior to enacting Buffet's trade policy.
We have all this illegal immigration because our politicians covertly approve of illegal immigration because our politicians are closer socially to the employers of illegal immigrants than they are to the people who want the illegal immigration stopped.
Don't blame the immigrants. It can't be wrong to want a better life for your family. Blame their employers and the politicians who serve their employers.
Saven, don't be confused by my Indian name. I am from 30% English who came to USA before 1700 and 70% German, Swedish and Dutch who came over to the USA before 1900. Let the whitness thing go. We don't need it.
