The essay in The American Journal of Bioethics said spectacular animals could be brought to life using a targeted gene-editing system known as CRISPR-CAS9, i.e. we could see the fire-breathing dragons swarming our skies.

So, CRISPR/Cas9, is a gene-editing technique that can target and modify DNA with groundbreaking accuracy. It's been around from 2012, but became really hot topic in the last couple of months. CRISPR/Cas9 is found in bacteria, which use them to disable attacks from viruses. It has a lot of potential, but it could also spark a lot controversy, mainly because of being capable of altering the human DNA.
