Is an individual's sense of morality obtained through genetics or environment?

Neither.

How does a serial killer come to be with loving and caring parents? Or someone who has seen extreme abuse come out okay?

Its the way we, as individuals, percieve certain situations that are morals come into being.

Aside from obvious inherited mental illness, the majority of any individuals morals are formed by the environment and the instructions given at a psychologically formative stage.

Of course, the human animal is very adaptive and there are doubtless many thousands of instances where an individual has adjusted their moral 'profile', often due to them being truely open minded people.
