Inducing REM, under general anaesthesia?

I've read that Physostigmine can enduce the onset of REM sleep.

This brings me to the question of how can you keep a patient asleep while simutaneously producing REM.

I believe that anaesthesia slows the eye movement, so it is naturally anti-REM.

So my question is, how can you keep someone unconscious, while maintaining them in the last stage of sleep, or REM?

General Anaesthesia Research: Aroused from a Deep Sleep

The above article states that sleep under general anaesthesia, "EEG recordings resemble those associated with non-REM sleep, suggesting that they are generated by similar patterns of cortical and thalamocortical activity".

Physostigmine alters onset but not duration of REM sleep in man

The above article states that physotigimine alters when REM sleep begins.

Antagonism of sevoflurane anaesthesia by physostigmine: effects on the auditory steady-state response and bispectral index

Now the above article states that "physostigmine can antagonize, at least partially, the hypnotic effect of sevoflurane and changes in arousal after physostigmine are shown by ASSR measurements. However, the antagonism is not as clear or reliable as with propofol".

Okay, so where are we? Is it humanly possible to induce and maintain unconsciousness while simutaneosly inducing the REM stage of sleep?
