1. Create characters

2. Give them uniquely identifiable personality traits

3. Use them to make a statement.

In your case, you already have steps 1 and 2. :)

Er, ah, I was thinking more in terms of a statement on science politics, rather than Hannibal Lector.

Scott Adams doesn't do politics either because they are too locally flavoured. your audience is bigger if you avoid politics.

That said, science politics could be compared to office politics i guess. And Dilbert got famous because of the office life. In fact Scott mentioned that he started focusing on the office aspect because people thought the comic was about that, although in reality at that point in time it wasn't.

this info is somewhere on the dilbert site. On the history of the comic. You may find your own link. ;)

I agree with this. I like the characters, the characters are good. They're cute, I like them. The problem you have right now is not your characters, they're cute. The problem you have right now is that you have really cute characters making shit jokes about nothing.

Therefore, spend more time on your jokes so that (a) they're funny; and (b) they're about something. Sam thinks the 'something' should be big Themes: politics, wry cultural observations, etc., whereas I think there should be far more jokes about bottoms. However, as long as they're about something, it can only get better.

oh dear god. I have looked though next weeks comics. They are all about farting and peeing and poo.

We are going to see low-brow 'humour' till at least the 1st of october.

Oh well hopefully the low brow humour will attract the high brow minds. :D

Not necessarily, it was just an example. It can be any statement he wants it to be. :p

Since we are all friends I can take you on a trip to the future. Let's fast forward to the 1st of october.

Clearly a fart joke. But isn't the deeper message that lab animals are bored? Lead an inhumane life? Zoo animals walk circles. Chickens peck each other. Lab animals fill their time with meaningless fart contests.
