well not really, but i couldnt think of a suitable title... so:

i was having a look at wikibooks earlier tonight, and i was astonished at the absolute lack of books on there. i hereby challenge every member here to contribute at least one chapter to a book on their area of expertise. hell it doesnt even have to be your area of expertise, you can write on just about anything you know, i started writing on algebra.

we need to get this information out there so that todays children(and people of all ages) can benefit from free information that public schools wordwide are failing to teach.
the internet should be a place of enlightenment, so lets enlighten it already.

this would have been good to post just before winter break. I would have loved to write something then, but now I have no time. remind me as this semester comes to a close, I have thoughts on lots of things =]

its kind of lke a collection of online textbooks... free learning material. but due to copyright laws, all the content must be original, and therefore must be written by wikipedians or have the author release the copyright

Yeah but you can just summarise stuff from books so it's virtually the same content just reworded, right? Or is that plagiarism?

This is a good idea, if you believe you have something to contribute, you should.

firefly;

summarising stuff from books can also be considered plagiarism if it is jsut the books content with a few words removed. what i am doing is using a textbooks content and index pages so that i dont forget to add anything, then writing what i can on it from my knowledge.

this is a good idea, sciforums member are quite smart. hell, if you compile all of the SR threads, it would add up to a book =]

p.s. i have a friend who is a math major, and she is writing a... I think geometry book. maybe she can contribute it.

Thanks vslayer. Interesting idea. Do you have to write the whole book yourself, or can others contribute? Couldn't they make all the current articles on the site into a massive encyclopedia-type book?

anyone can contribute to a book, but wikipedia focuses more on what things are, not how they are done, so using it as a learning resource isnt all that effective. however some of the content may be useful in compiling a book.
