Why do they say that the kidneys regenerated when they also implied they had been there from the start? In any case she were very lucky she had those extra kidneys!

To be a little more accurate she was born with '4' kidneys they were deformed (or rather 2 kidneys with double valves, double lobed), the 2 upper 'lobes' were defective or injured from chronic infections probably from back flow of urine from all the mess up piping, thankfully here defective ones were redundant as the lower 'lobes' were working fine.
