Genetic Engineering

Wood really isn't good for much. It doesn't make strong houses or good boats, and who uses paper anymore. Shouldn't we be growing taco plants or pizza trees in hydroponic pods? PB&J bread. Yes, - the new hybrid bread with peanut and fruit DNA.

That is simply absurd. Most houses where I live are almost completely wood frame.
and who uses paper anymore.
Everyone?

Maybe in your fantasy land we can grow computers on trees?

Wrong on all counts.

You might want to try the argument that we shouldn't be using wood.

Most of my backyard is wood.

It's fenced on three sides, has two decks, one roofed, stairs, and is shaded by living wood.

Much of my house is wood too. The floors, many of the walls, the trim, the furniture.

What wood you suggest I replace all this with? Plastic?

Wood really isn't good for much.

That's right! What has wood ever given us? Nothing!

Well, houses. OK, houses are good. But other than houses, nothing! Not a thing.

And boats of course. Boats and houses. And that's it.

Well, and early airplanes. And oars. And guard rails. And telephone polls. But besides houses, boats, airplanes, oars, guard rails and telephone polls - NOTHING!

And of course there are products made from ground up wood like paper, rayon and cellophane. And insulation. And cellulose-based explosives. And of course you can burn it.

But that's IT! Beyond houses, boats, airplanes, oars, guard rails, telephone polls, paper, rayon, insulation, cellphane, fuel and explosives - it's good for almost nothing.

it's good for almost nothing

What I find strange about "Greenies" and the Use Wood movement (from sustainable forest) because wood stores nasty carbon dioxide

Have they not figured out the carbon dioxide is released when wood rots

And it rots fairly quickly

Go get more wood - grow more sustainable forest

So we store the carbon dioxide in trees so we can chop them down to rot and let it go again?????

:)

Right. And some of that carbon is released as CO2. Most of it, however, remains in the cellulose, because that's hard to break down. Eventually much of it becomes dirt, which also stores a lot of carbon. Of the wood we use, much of it ends up in landfills, which will store that carbon for decades.

Meanwhile, if you are using more and more wood, you are growing more and more trees - and taking more and more CO2 out of the environment. And not all of that is returned; much of it is sequestered in dirt and landfills.
So we store the carbon dioxide in trees so we can chop them down to rot and let it go again?
Fortunately it's a net negative - the more wood you grow, the more CO2 is removed from the atmosphere.

5 ..... 5 Just trying to stimulate the imaginations. Guess that isn't going to happen. I have a deep disgust for rectangular architecture. I see it as statues to a lack of imagination. We could re-engineer (upgrade) our heads-up-display's with genetic engineering. Augmented eyes and ears, you name it. It's Sci-Fi come alive, and the response I got was about trees?

... the response I got was about trees?

Does it occur to you that, if you have an idea or thought you'd like to share, perhaps the responsibility to ensure that thought is understood lies - not with us - but with you?

Too much, or too little? Ok, lets take the first sentence, and try to turn the question into something stupid. Mission accomplished.
