Gay flamingos adopt a baby

"Fernando and Carlos are a same sex couple who have been known to steal other flamingos' eggs by chasing them off their nest because they wanted to rear them themselves," said WWT spokeswoman Jane Waghorn.

"They were rather good at sitting on eggs and hatching them so last week, when a nest was abandoned, it seemed like a good idea to make them surrogate parents."

Gay flamingos are not uncommon, she added.

"If there aren't enough females or they don't hit it off with them, they will pair off with other males," she said.

We psittaculturists have seen female parrots do that. They will pair off, go through the courtship ritual, and even lay infertile eggs which they incubate in vain. Since some domestic birds don't make good parents and there are always hatchlings who need to be reared by humans, an arduous round-the-clock job, I always thought we should give those gay birds fertile eggs and let them do the job.

Glad to see it works with flamingos.

However I've never heard of it with male psittacines.

Clearly these flamingoes were born heterosexual but watched too many movies and tv programs with Gay characters which converted them.
