Faecal Excretion - Human vs Animal

How did humans (as a whole) develop a extreme pyschological and physiological rejection of anything concerning faecal functions? Those include personal, familial and even those with regard to other species, whatever they may be.

I fart....you say "you stink....that's terrible". Your dog may roll around in another animal's faeces, or even eat it. "C'mon Fido....Gotta wash you now....naughty dog" is your reply.

Various species of fish and marine animals thrive on excreta of other sea dwelling creatures. Numerous land based animals use other animal's faeces as a tool for hunting their prey or marking territory.

I ask this for one reason. I have been working with autistic children and adolescents for over 15 years. Mainly (not exclusively) their cognitive response to either their own, or others' excretory processess are basically neutral.

Such phobias help reduce disease and mortality in societies without services like sewers and indoor plumbing. Thus, societies with such phobias survive, and those comfortable remaining in close proximity with their own wastes do not.

I have spent a considerable number of years with horses and find them to be most explicit in their use of faecal function to mark territory and determine status within the herd.

They carefully avoid ingesting faecal matter, however, with the few exceptions being a newborn foal requiring bacteria to start up his digestive process or a more advanced animal requiring to do the same after illness, or stress which has disrupted digestion.

I agree with billvon that an aversion to waste is a survival strategy in the avoidance of harmful pathogens. For myself, I also try to avoid ingesting food that makes me smell bad, for I believe that such is a symptom of my body indicating that this food is not the best for my health and well-being. Digestion naturally produces some gas, but it can be minimal, odorless and cause no discomfort to self or others if the proper diet for the individual is identified and followed. :)

Peoople dont have aversions to their own cocky and i really think people like the smell of their own farts yet little tolerance for that of others.

But tbh veggiepatch, peole reject anything previously internal from another usually especially if the person is unknown\stranger. Burping is a good example.

Nothing from my own body bothers me at all...excpet urine. Oh, one time i peed in a clean can and left it for a few days when i smelt it i gagged. It was horrible.

Thanks Billvon, but it still doesn't explain human's aversion to excreta in comparison to other animal species. Cows, turtles, blowflies, sharks, whatever, do not have the cognitive skills to build their own sanitary facilities, nor make themselves aware of the "risks" of being exposed to their own wastes.

Really what I want to know is why mankind has a fear of contact, in any way shape or form, of their own excreta, whether it be my own, my sister's, my dog's or the horse 20 miles away.

Are there any risks associated with exposure to excreta from any living creature? Excluding those such as Hendra virus carriers and so on, of course. While not condoning scatological fetishes, I feel that mankind has over-emphasised the fear of his/her waste products as a source of disease. A prime example is a menstruating woman - without any predisposing conditions, her monthly vaginal flow is totally natural and disease free.

Some sort of medieval or religious traditions have made us fear our own bodies for what they are.

After over 20,000 posts, one would surely learn to spell. Anyway, your reply is a lame reply to a legitimate question.

Exactly. You'll learn to ignore John99, he's vastly under-educated and somewhat of a crank.

It is not lame at all. What is so legitimate about asking why peole dont like the smell of cocky? You really dont know?

To the other, i have dyslexia so in the morning i am lazy with the spell checker.

Because it's nothing to do with the topic. (And you didn't ask...)

You really dont know?
Do you?
I doubt it.

Dyslexia is not a valid excuse for laziness.

I absolutely don't like shit or piss, whether it's mine or another's or some animals. But I have read an article that described how primitive man, used to check feces to determine the health of the individual. I'm willing to bet most people know their health is suffering when they have diarrhea or they're constipated for several days at a time. I also think lessor health problems can be detected from fecal examination between those two extremes.

There are more bacteria in pee pee...especially if left out for a few days.
"pee pee"?
What are you, a four-year old?
And urine generally evaporates or drains/ soaks away. Hence it's not seen as so much of a problem.

Thank you all again for your replies and input.

Except for John99chromosomes....well that explains it!

From your forum ID, can I assume you are a vegetarian of some sort? We have lots of levels of vegetarians on this forum and I would like to know where you fit in?

IDK, seems like we got a socky on our hands.
