Most here are too young to remember the hoopla when the first pulsar was observed.
It rotated 200-300 times per second, giving off very precisely timed pulses. Initially nobody could imagine a natural phenomenon capable of high speed precisely timed pulses. The initial speculation was that we were observing signals produced by intelligent extraterrestrials, possibly the interstellar communications of a civilization with star ships. The bubble was burst in a few days.
Work an analyzing the signals for some type of subtle amplitude or frequency modulation was interrupted when somebody brought up the neutron star prediction made by Einstein or some other bright relativity physicist.
