It's a small implant that can be used to do electronic transactions, open doors that have receivers etc.
As for the whole "Mark of the Beast" nonsense, you could imply every bar-code has a specific number, that every military person has a serial number and that the UK police force has it all wrong (in their phone number) Seriously it's more Apples and Oranges, a implant being one thing and religion being... well something else.
