Does it matter when the world ends?

Suppose Earth will be destroyed sometime within 1000 years.
Does it matter whether it's 1000 years or 500 years from now or 200 or 100 years or 50 years, 5 years or 3 months or whatever?
Not only does it matter to you personally but does it matter overall?
Does it matter whether science continues to advance and/or whether life becomes better 1st or whether there's a collapse of civilization 1st?
Does it matter whether Earth is destroyed accidently by humans, intentionally by humans, by aliens, by something natural we could've prevented or by something natural we couldn't prevent?

Hope it doesn't but there's little that I could do to stop it so I will just live my life as if it wasn't going to happen. :)

Not to me, but there will be some really pissed off billionaires who will lose their money and other powerful people in charhge of things that will also be upset. But it won't last long will it.;)

What is "overall"? It can "matter" or "mean" anything only to a conscious entity. If it were destroyed, and there was no life left (assume there's no life anywhere else), then it wouldn't matter, since there's no one left to whom it could matter.

perhaps we should take the scale of this issue down a notch

Does it matter whether you post on sci?
If not, why do you post?

Fantastic questions.:)
"Yes and no" in a spiritual way and definitely yes in a practical one.

No. It matters not a whit.

If God exists, the world - or Universe - will end when He directs. By definition that will be the 'right time'.

If God does not exist, then all of existence is pointless.

Whether everything is pointless depends on whether there are gods???
Ridiculous. There's no more point or meaning to the existence of gods than to the existence of humans (& other life in the universe?).

if the world end then humanity will end with it, asuming it will end relitivly quickly then it will be as if we didnt exist and we will be irelivent ad therefore what we do with pour tima and there for the amount of that time is irelivent aswell

It would suck for me, personally, if it happened anytime in the next 60 years or so.

After that, I don't give a shit.

If the world were to be destroyed within 50-100 years from now then it matters if you are young and love life and it matters if you have children; after that it only matters in a sentimental sense.

Of Course it matters. That kind of thinking prevented people from inventing this thing called "The Internet" sooner so people like you could put their Defeatist points of view onto the net.

In my personal opinion i think it does matter whether the world ends sooner then later. but i think all this "OMG GLOBAWL WURMUNG!" shit is just crap.

The world since the beginning of time has warmed up and down. So yeah
global warming isn't going to be the end of TEH WURLD! it is only going to make things warmer/cooler for a while until about 200 years where everything will be normal again.

Please think rationally about this kind of thing. the only reason why we think it's all our fault is because we've been led to believe it by the government and media L2Not be gullible and Think for your self.

What kind of thinking delayed the internet???
Where is any indication of defeatist thinking???
This thread isn't about the validity of any particular danger. It's in Philosophy for a reason.

Nothing really matters if you look at it that way.

100% agree.

Though, I have to tell you, if there was evidence that the world was COOLING, I would be distressed. Not for the immediate future, because these things take tons of time, but just knowing that an ice age was around the corner would make me worry for mankind's near-future.

The weirdest thing about the global warming craze is that nobody can explain why global warming is such a bad thing. Is it really just the rise in the world's oceans? The Dutch figured out how to tame that a long time ago (stop glancing at New Orleans). Warmer weather means longer growing seasons. It means the temperate zone will creep further North and South, supporting more life for a longer period of time. It will mean that trees retain their leaves longer, scrubbing more CO2 from the air.

An article in Scientific American two years ago hypothesized that global warming should hasten the Sahara's return to grasslands.

Think for a moment how absolutely AWFUL global cooling would be. Increased energy demands for heating. Shorter growing periods. Contracted temperate zones. Longer winters. Massive snows like the kind we saw last winter in upstate NY. Snows and icings in places that are not yet equipped to handle them.

And hundreds of thousands of years from now, glaciers could march slowly South, digging out every city in their path. These are the things that carved the great lakes. There would be NO STOPPING THEM. Compare that to the oceans rising one foot and then help me wake everyone else up before we spend trillions of dollars fighting a good and natural trend.

It can matter to us now
