Do we die?

Heavily dramatized videos of people expressing their over active imagination.

As for death - humans have a strong primeval instinct for survival, that unfortunately, creates a dichotomy for many of us when we face the real prospect of our eventual non-existence, death. There is no escape, but we want to survive, so create a fictional exit - an afterlife - so perfect it must be true and then we don't have to die.

Unfortunately the soul concept, the part that is supposed to survive death, worked well for a time when we had no comprehension of how the brain functioned. As soon as neuroscience began to explain the complexity of neural networks and how they account for memory, thinking, emotions, identity, or in other words all the properties that make each of us a conscious being, then the soul concept should have been instantly discarded. All those properties were once assumed to be the contribution of the soul, but since the brain does all that then what is left for the soul - nothing - it cannot have any active properties - indistinguishable from something that does not exist.

Some perspective of brain complexity - recently scientists have begun mapping the neural connections in the brain. They have begun with mice since the storage needs are huge. They estimate that to map the human brain will need several billion terabytes, or approximately 50% of the total digital storage capacity currently in use on the planet. And that for just a single brain.

Yes of course we die and it is very permanent.
