A while back, Daniel Gross had a piece in Slate about business executives who falsify their credentials. His point was that these guys often do their jobs as well as anybody else, so why should anybody care? And God knows why they do it in the first place, since they're probably going to get caught.

I agree with the first observation, but would go on to say that the underlying question raised in these cases is why we rely on credentials so much in the first place. Mr. Gross's second point may or may not be true. My suspicion is that plenty of people get away with it. But neither of us can ever know, since nobody writes stories about the phonies who aren't caught.

Peace.
