Die For Your Country

yes. im america, at least.

in a nation with representative government, there isnt...but america doesnt have that.

What is your nation then without the government? Is it still america?

furthermore....america, to me, is represented by our constitution.

not politics.
america doesnt exist anymore in my eyes, and this is why im not freaking out about having to stay in europe for another year.

america used to be a wonderful place to raise a family, for example. there is NO way that i would allow my children to be attacked on all sides by what is going on in america right now. there are no morals...shit, i wouldnt even allow my mother to spend unsupervised time with my kids, much less put them in an american school where they watch television instead of learning.

Why is it when I say these things that I am an american hater and when you say it you are a patriot?

:) because i am saying it from 21 years of experience, living there happily....and then in 4 years seeing the nation ripped to shreds by a cabal of uber-rich elitists, for their own profit.

some call me leaving america "cowardly" (i have lost friends over it), but i see it as more a case of "disenchantment" and "wild rage".

In my day (three times your experience) the rednecks (you're used to them calling themselves patriots but this was back when they first stole our flag) had a bumper sticker that said "America: Love it or leave it." So we got our own, that said "America: Fix it or fuck it."

I think you have responded to both slogans.

indeed, fraggle. i do not love what america has become.

it depresses me every day, actually....to see europeans living the way americans did 20 years ago, today...*shrug* i guess ill stay here until the americanization of this continent is complete, and then its off to where? hmmmm.... the australian outback, i suppose is the only place where fast food culture hasnt caught on?

God, I hate that whole "love it or leave it" motto. Should be "love it or change it". Leave it? Pssh.. buncha wimps..

i would die for my country.

i would never die for the government.
What is a country, other than a set of borders and the people in them?

I might die for an idea, like freedom or responsibility (although I'd rather live for them), but I'm not really in favour of dying for a few lines drawn in the sand...

Does the EU's freedom of movement compromise Europeans? Should Europeans die to prevent that?

I think compromising lines is only a problem when the people across them don't support a compatible worldview ... in which case you're fighting for the ideas, not the lines.

europe's freedom of movement is akin to the freedom americans have to travel between individual states.

if the chinese army invaded europe...that is the manner of compromise i intended to put forth. by allowing it to happen because of "imaginary lines" kind of thinking, you compromise the citizenry.

perhaps i wasnt clear with what i meant. *shrug*
it happens...especially to absentminded fools like myself. i just assume that everyone knows what is inside of my head. :D

i left..am i a wimp?
*adopts an unconvincing tough guy pose*

Nah, you're a visionairy. You realized that nobody is gonna try and fix this country so it's hopeless. It's inevitable that you'd have to leave the country. ;)

i actually had a political action committee set up and ready to roll as soon as i got back to america...but now im stuck in europe for another year, so....eh.

i am doubting that i will move back before some of the damage the GOP has done in the last five years, starts to be repaired.

The only thing worth dying for is saving your family and saving the world itself. The country, well, we are a global economy now, so I don't know what you mean by this. We have completely globalized.

There are thnigs to die for, you can die for the human race. You can die saving the world, or saving people at 911, you can die protecting your family, or protecting yourself.

Honestly however, I think it's better to live for these things than to die for these things or people.
