But are not most (?) of those people who might block such things within the "most vulnerable" bracket? 60+ years old etc? Self-defeating to try to hamper things, surely?
That is irrelevant - you are arguing as if governing the country for the benefit of its citizens were in the Republican Party's interest or part of its agenda.
The Republican Party has been taken over by a fascist movement. Fascist movements are backed and run for the benefit of the "band of brothers" that launch them - the Republican Party currently exists to enrich and empower the small group of corporate capitalist authoritarians that control it.
Notice that the Republican State and Federal level politicians who for decades have been blocking all attempts to provide good public health insurance to every US citizen have first class socialized medical care available to them on demand, regardless of what they deny to others. They also have lucrative jobs waiting for them if they lose their seats for betraying their constituents. Their corporate backers take care of them.
In point of fact, essentially all Republican Federal and State politicians (fewer than a dozen outliers of the hundreds) have been working to block all Federal health care provisions supported by a Democratic President since 1980, and I merely observed that such a consistent and firmly established pattern of behavior was at least a possibility for the near future.
To illustrate
1) they have backed more than 50 Federal bills attempting to to repeal some or all of the provisions of health care bill they call "Obamacare", and have made no attempts to replace them or mitigate the harms of repealing that allegedly Democratic Party legislation
(written in its essentials under Republican anti-socialist hero Mitt Romney to forestall the popular adoption of socialized basic health care insurance in Massachusetts, but expanded to the nation as an alternative to socialized medical insurance under the Obama administration - which is what led to repeated Republican repudiation of what had been their own proposal).
despite its large benefits disproportionately going to Republican citizens and regions willing to accept them, and the harms from its various part and whole revocations likely targeting disproportionately the Republican voting base.
They have also abetted and supported numerous court cases attempting to block or dismantle Obamacare (thus avoiding political blame for the consequential harms) - including the case right now in front of a Supreme Court they have worked hard to pack with Partisan and politically loyal Justices, which if decided with sufficient Party and Federalist Society agenda bias could destroy Obamacare as a functioning Federal initiative.
In my judgment Republican Party politicians and media spokesmen are likely to keep doing what they've been doing throughout their careers, what they are paid and backed and supported to do, what they have promised their backers they would do - that's all I meant to say. They sold their souls when they joined the Party of Iran/Contra and Iraq/911 and refugee children in wire mesh kennels with cement floors, the Party of James O'Keefe and Limbaugh and Bannon and Breitbart and Coulter and Fox and Sinclair and Hannity and Sykes and Brooks and Murdoch, the Party of AIDS and crack and toxic waste and now Covid, the Party of militarized and racially bigoted police beating and killing people while overstuffing abusive prisons with the consequences of defunded welfare and school systems, the Party of public dishonesty and slander about everything - literally everything, up to and including the weather and its forecasters, and certainly public health matters.
My guess is that all Republican officials and spokesmen are going to lie about Covid in the future as they have in the past, with the goal of enriching and empowering their paymasters. It's not a bad guess, eh?
