Corona Virus 2019-nCoV

But are not most (?) of those people who might block such things within the "most vulnerable" bracket? 60+ years old etc? Self-defeating to try to hamper things, surely? But then this would be politics, so nothing should surprise.
?? Of course it will be available to them.

Are they? I am over 60, as are most of my friends. I only know a small handful of anti vaxxers. Most of my friends are firm believers in science and medicine.

You both missed the point: the comment made by iceaaura included the assumption that the Republican Senate does not block all Federal public health initiatives - i.e. suggesting that it was in fact a possibility... to which I replied (somewhat facetiously, granted) to the effect that it would surely be self-defeating for them (the Republican Senate) to hamper things, given that they (the Republican Senate) were all 60+ etc. (I know they're not all 60+ but the image I have of the US Republican Senators is of affluent pensioners who haven't moved with the times).
It had nothing to do with anti-vaxxers.
But hey, no biggie. :)

Given that some senior Republican's are planning for a Trump second term any thing is possible in the states.
Trump has already expressed his anti vax sentiment early on in his presidency. So who knows where the magic rabbit hole leads to...

That is irrelevant - you are arguing as if governing the country for the benefit of its citizens were in the Republican Party's interest or part of its agenda.

The Republican Party has been taken over by a fascist movement. Fascist movements are backed and run for the benefit of the "band of brothers" that launch them - the Republican Party currently exists to enrich and empower the small group of corporate capitalist authoritarians that control it.

Notice that the Republican State and Federal level politicians who for decades have been blocking all attempts to provide good public health insurance to every US citizen have first class socialized medical care available to them on demand, regardless of what they deny to others. They also have lucrative jobs waiting for them if they lose their seats for betraying their constituents. Their corporate backers take care of them.

In point of fact, essentially all Republican Federal and State politicians (fewer than a dozen outliers of the hundreds) have been working to block all Federal health care provisions supported by a Democratic President since 1980, and I merely observed that such a consistent and firmly established pattern of behavior was at least a possibility for the near future.

To illustrate
1) they have backed more than 50 Federal bills attempting to to repeal some or all of the provisions of health care bill they call "Obamacare", and have made no attempts to replace them or mitigate the harms of repealing that allegedly Democratic Party legislation

(written in its essentials under Republican anti-socialist hero Mitt Romney to forestall the popular adoption of socialized basic health care insurance in Massachusetts, but expanded to the nation as an alternative to socialized medical insurance under the Obama administration - which is what led to repeated Republican repudiation of what had been their own proposal).

despite its large benefits disproportionately going to Republican citizens and regions willing to accept them, and the harms from its various part and whole revocations likely targeting disproportionately the Republican voting base.

They have also abetted and supported numerous court cases attempting to block or dismantle Obamacare (thus avoiding political blame for the consequential harms) - including the case right now in front of a Supreme Court they have worked hard to pack with Partisan and politically loyal Justices, which if decided with sufficient Party and Federalist Society agenda bias could destroy Obamacare as a functioning Federal initiative.

In my judgment Republican Party politicians and media spokesmen are likely to keep doing what they've been doing throughout their careers, what they are paid and backed and supported to do, what they have promised their backers they would do - that's all I meant to say. They sold their souls when they joined the Party of Iran/Contra and Iraq/911 and refugee children in wire mesh kennels with cement floors, the Party of James O'Keefe and Limbaugh and Bannon and Breitbart and Coulter and Fox and Sinclair and Hannity and Sykes and Brooks and Murdoch, the Party of AIDS and crack and toxic waste and now Covid, the Party of militarized and racially bigoted police beating and killing people while overstuffing abusive prisons with the consequences of defunded welfare and school systems, the Party of public dishonesty and slander about everything - literally everything, up to and including the weather and its forecasters, and certainly public health matters.

My guess is that all Republican officials and spokesmen are going to lie about Covid in the future as they have in the past, with the goal of enriching and empowering their paymasters. It's not a bad guess, eh?

Opinion:
Every night for over a month the international news published here, in Au has persistently reported massive daily increases in infection rates and associated government action and inaction in the Northern hemisphere generally.
Quotes from nurses and doctors: "We are currently over whelmed" etc are common...

It seems that the issues regarding transition of POTUS administration will most likely be moot, when the USA enters a thresh hold severe COVID crisis in the next couple of weeks if not sooner.
The need to act as the hospital systems collapse, will become even more desperate than it is now and will not go much longer being ignored by the White House.

If Trump holds unto power it won't matter whether the "White House" ignores such needs or doesn't - he is incapable of arranging competent and timely response, and has no interest in such things anyway.

Utah, for example, is so near collapse of its hospital system its Republican officials are contemplating shutting the whole State down and mandating mask wearing everywhere in it - but they are not strenuously pushing for Federal aid or support. Everybody knows about Trump.

How to solve attending a Drive thru only McDonald's rule when you don't have a car

Make one

Belgian car.jpg
This Belgian family wanted a burger during the COVID-19 lock-down.
Because of lock-down regulations, McDonald’s was only open for drive-through, but the family doesn’t own a car. Luckily, the lock-down also meant they had time to spare.

Covid Update Australia.
Melbourne Victoria, No confirmed cases for 20 consecutive days. Masks still mandatory in public, most restrictions relaxed or removed. Borders under review.
=====
South Australia, Gone into severe 6 day "circuit breaker" lock down due to outbreak from hotel quarantine (believed to be from infected surface) Possible new strain with short incubation period. Internal state border restrictions re-established.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-19/sa-toughest-coronavirus-lockdown-comes-into-place/12897542

Notes:
  • It appears that the ability to move to various forms of lock down quickly and effectively to force a stop to community transmission is going to be the new norm until an effective vaccine is in play.
  • There appears to be no other option if optimized economic and health outcomes are desired.
  • Viral mutation has been observed in a number of outbreaks around the globe and may prevent an effective vaccine from being implemented.
  • It appears inevitable that nations around the globe will eventually be forced into severe lock down and do similar to Australia and New Zealand in the future regardless of community resistance. The resistance to strong measures will eventually disappear as the situation deteriorates and people are forced to realize they have no choice and really never had one to begin with.

It seems the state borders in Australia are now opening after zero new cases continue, and the discovery and ending of the SA lockdown after a person with symptoms was found to have lied.
A month with zero cases in Victoria and NSW.
Same applies to NZ.
GREAT NEWS [KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED IN STAYS THAT WAY]

I'm guessing when Politicians start to remember they have voters overseas and start some sort of rescue the following will happen
  • I will test negative after 9 months in hot spot
  • Arrive back Australia
  • Still put in quarantine
  • Catch COVID-19
:(

Yesterday here in Melbourne we celebrated our first COVID elimination day... (28 days with out any new cases)

Terrible news coming in from the USA. Trump couldn't have seeded a greater calamity though his denial and inaction.
I hope people in the USA know that the average of 4% fatality rate only applies if the health systems manage to cope? Super spreader Thanksgiving could see most of the USA infected which puts a 4% fatality rate at about 12 million but if the health system's collapse that rate will be far greater than 4%

Vaccines will start this December?
We will probably see the first vaccines approved for widespread use near the end of December. The first people to get them will be front line medical workers and high risk people (and probably the president and his staff.) It will be months before it is widely available.
