Censors and networks don't get it.

Personally I hate it when networks decide to show a movie or play on t.v. then chop the shit out of it because, "That can't be shown on television". This uptight society of ours is evidently so close to the savage, unlike Europe, Canada, etc. etc. that we would go on a rampage of rapine assaults if shown naked breasts or hear certain words uttered in our livingrooms. I believe it was the Prime Minister of Australia, when asked about our aversion to showing the nude human form in our society, that said, " Thank heaven you got the puritans and we got the criminals." :)

Final cut

The director of a film gets final cut, though we know that this condition is arrived at on some occasions through tedious negotiations; the plethora of "Director's Cut" DVD's speaks to the result. Nonetheless, the studio cannot alter a frame of the Final Cut without the director's explicit authorization.

But the directors are also expected to cut the edited versions, and I'm not sure how often this happens. I know the issue was invoked recently when a video store offered bowdlerized versions of popular films, but the only thing that can explain the bad TV editing in that case is a lack of effort on the director's part.

So it goes many ways. Hold the censors accountable for stupid standards, the studios for twisted priorities, and the directors for failing to better protect their work.

Of course, some movies shouldn't be shown on general television for the amount of editing they must endure.

At least, that's the way it goes in the US. Can't speak for anywhere else.

no cutting watsoever...you know... the 'freedom of speech', 'own responsibility', 'we are not children' attitude.

i hate movies that've been edited and cut out. it's even worse if the editing isn't done properly and when along with the 'relevant' bits, the not so 'relevant' bits for editing get cut out as well.

The voice-over

I'm a fan of the voice-over that doesn't fit. It's bad enough when the words don't match up with the mouths, but every once in a while you can still catch them using someone else's voice entirely.

Just nit-picking here.

Final cut traditionally goes to the director (if well-known enough, talented enough or it is indie) but final cut is entirely negotiable.
Highest clout gets final cut.

Back to the topic...

I think the nightly news and trends to capture ratings though "shock value" is much more distubing and detrimental to the young psyche and general public than a couple of bouncing titties on the screen.

Maybe it is just me.

LOL

It can go horribly in the other direction as well.

I will never forget...

I was watching "The Breakfast Club" on TV (WPIX channel 11 in NYC) many years ago.

Every time someone said, "Fucking jerk!" they dubbed in (very poorly, I might add), "Fuzzy nerd!"

They just made up this dumb ass expression that no one ever used, just trying to synch the lips.

If I were John Hughes I would have wanted blood after that!!

They are censoring the wrong things

Like in the titanic. Class segregation, adultery, ect. are completely acceptable, but showing breasts is absolutely abbhorable. It's things like this that create the taboos that fuel many young people's screwed up views, while sustaining zealous the zealous christian right, who point at the children for the corrupting power of the devil". It's a cycle....
