canada has the us on its list of nations that torture

Aha, see, I spoke to soon. Canada's balls are still MIA.

Funny thing that this is reaching american attention. That kid WAS a real terrorist. His Family has admitted on Canadian television they thought 911 victims "deserved it". They still maintain ties to Al Queda.

A real awful torture case totally escaped american attention was the REAL wrongful(as in totally uncalled for, he was "innocent"), case of Meyer Arar.

That case has probably more to do with putting U.S on a watch list. It was probably even a part of the settlement with Arar.

At least Arar was compensated over $10 million by the Canadian government for the time he spent in US custody. This kid has been held for over 5 years now without charge. If they're so sure he's a terrorist then give him a fair trial, should be easy to get a conviction right? Then he can be held for as long as they want. Otherwise they're no better than Syria or Iran.

I suspect he is in the same boat as anyone else captured in Afganistan with an AK after a firefight. He's fucked.

. That kid WAS a real terrorist. .

DUDE i don't want to argue with you, but he was 15.
When I was 15, I had been taken into care at 12 because I was considered too dangerous to be left with my mother. I've done things which I am ashamed of now, I was homeless living off crime for most of my teenage life and still managed to become one of the best chef's in Europe. I set out to become a gangster an al capone, I've laughed in the face of the police,I've laughed in the face of my government,I've laughed in the face of the world .

But now i am a man, I have RESPONSIBILITIES as an adult (34) and I see my mistakes. he was 15 the right counseling he would be a BROTHER OF EARTH like you or me. I am a different man to the child I was. I learn't from my mistakes he could be a different child because that's what he is a child:)

Well if I was in charge(of the U.S), i'd just follow international law best I could...after all they are "enforcing it" right? :D

He's lucky to be alive, if a 15 year old kid with an AK is shooting at me, I want him dead. I could give a shit if he came from a broken home or not.

Not so strange. The press in America is quite compliant, in these matters.

I can't disagree , if a kid was shooting at me the first thing I would want to do is shoot back.
Surely this 15 yr old has not got enough life experience to have a political view strong enough to resort to terrorism??
I would of thought the main targets would be the people who have moulded him into this.Be it from his school, family, place of worship or islamic bookstore somewhere an adult/adults is corrupting young minds ,If this is the case then he won't be the only one and they will use this as negative propaganda against the west fueling the hatred preached to these kids, and so next time there's 2 or 3 kid's poping at you with an AK ,This kid probably isn't the cause ,it's the root of the problem you have to oust.

And there is always the possibility that this kid was a nasty peice of work, full of hate itching to hurt people..... I would like to think not

Aha, see, I spoke to soon. Canada's balls are still MIA.

It has now been incontrovertibly proved that they weren't missing because there aren't any.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's foreign ministry, responding to pressure from close allies, said on Saturday it would remove the United States and Israel from a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured.

Both nations expressed unhappiness after it emerged that they had been listed in a document that formed part of a training course manual on torture awareness given to Canadian diplomats.

Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier said he regretted the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the manual, which also classified some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture.

"It contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies. I have directed that the manual be reviewed and rewritten," Bernier said in a statement.

"The manual is neither a policy document nor a statement of policy. As such, it does not convey the government's views or positions."

The document -- made available to Reuters and other media outlets -- embarrassed the minority Conservative government, which is a staunch ally of both the United States and Israel.

you outa love reuters spinning.

The Canadian foreign minister has apologised for including the US and Israel on a list of states where prisoners are at risk of torture.

Maxime Bernier said the list, which formed part of a manual on torture awareness given to diplomats, "wrongly includes some of our closest allies".

Mr Bernier insisted the manual was not a policy document and did not convey the official views of his government.

The listing was criticised by the US and Israel, who demanded it be changed.

"We find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries like Iran and China. Quite frankly it's absurd," said the US ambassador to Canada, David Wilkins.

A spokesman for the Israeli embassy in Ottawa, Michael Mendel, said the Israeli Supreme Court was "on record as expressly prohibiting any type of torture".

"If Israel is included in the list in question, the ambassador of Israel would expect its removal," he added.

'Reviewed and rewritten'

In a statement on Saturday, Mr Bernier said he regretted the embarrassment caused by the public disclosure of the list and promised it would be changed to reflect the Canadian government's official position.

"It contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies. I have directed that the manual be reviewed and rewritten," he said.

"The manual is neither a policy document nor a statement of policy. As such, it does not convey the government's views or positions."

The manual lists US interrogation techniques such as forced nudity, isolation, sleep deprivation and the blindfolding of prisoners under its "definition of torture".

It also refers to the US detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, where a Canadian man, Omar Khadr, is being held. Critics say it ridicules Ottawa's claims that he is not being mistreated.

Other countries on the watch list include Afghanistan, China, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

The document was mistakenly provided to the human rights group, Amnesty International, as part of a court case it is bringing against the Canadian government over the treatment of detainees in Afghanistan.

The torture awareness course was introduced after Ottawa was strongly criticised for its handling of the case of a Canadian who was deported from the US to Syria in 2002.

Syrian-born Maher Arar, who was accused of being an al-Qaeda member, has said he was tortured during the 10 months he was detained in a prison in Damascus. An inquiry exonerated him of any links to terrorist groups in 2006.
