Can dogs see ghosts?

I've always wondered if dogs (and pets in general) could ''sense'' ghosts, or paranormal spirits. But, this article debunks that idea. There's not only no scientific proof that dogs can sense ghosts, but...our own beliefs and perceptions might be what we attach to our pets.

Dogs have extraordinary senses.
That is: dogs have senses that are perfectly ordinary in a dog, but would be considered super-powers in a human. We perceive only a fraction of what dogs perceive through their paws, fur, ears, and noses - especially their noses.
Dogs are intelligent. They have excellent memory, a strong sense of personal and group identity, ideas, reasoning, communication skills, empathy, problem-solving and pattern-recognition capability. And imagination. This means that they're susceptible to psychological trauma, depression, paranoia and psychosis. It also means that they can misinterpret sensory input, just as we can.
But dogs and humans interpret and misinterpret in different ways, each according to our culture. Where a dog may imagine a phantom she-wolf in heat, or a phantom rival for his territory, or a nocturnal intruder, his human companion might imagine a ghost or demon or nocturnal intruder.
There's overlap. That's why we're such good friends.

(P.S. There are no ghosts.)

Yes..apparently dogs can sense the presence of ghosts or paranormal energies. Not only may they sense them like emf fields, much as emf detectors do, but they actually appear to see things humans can't see. How do I know this? From reports of actual dog owners experiencing this with their pets. Read the discussion posts at the bottom of this article. The article itself is rather unhelpful. But the personal accounts of dogs reacting to unseen things are quite compelling.. Read up and decide for yourself:

I'm not sure that dogs and can ghosts but the bigger question for me is can they play poker?

Cats more likely.

I once lived with a cat (one never owns a cat) and one day I noticed that the cat was watching something. I looked where the cat was looking and 'saw' what appeared to be a small circular area of optical distortion, about the size of a baseball. (It was transparent, but whatever was behind it was distorted.) It was moving in the air and in a few seconds it was gone.

I'm inclined to write it off to my eyes playing tricks on me. Except... the cat apparently saw it too and drew my attention to it. So arguably, it was out there in the objective world that the cat and I shared.

I've never thought of it as a 'ghost', in the 'spirits of the departed' sense. It was just an anomaly (a glitch in the matrix). I don't have a clue what it was.

We had a dog who would bark (softly) at night and then sometimes get up and run at things. He usually ended up just running into a wall or something. He might have been chasing a ghost, but I'm pretty sure he was just dreaming. His legs would twitch like crazy while he was barking.

This is understandable, a ghost is actually an emf field in the shape of the human they used to be, that's why you can also see their clothes because you are looking at the emf of their clothes.

actually, dogs are predators, like cats
predators tend to point their senses toward what takes their attention.

prey animals tend not to as a constant process.
they may alert to something but not point
they spring off instead of freeze and point, some do many dont, and all tend to have a mix of both
but dogs and cats tend mostly to always direct their head direction toward what takes their attention.
humans conceptualizing that as "seeing" is just human language and anthropomorphism

when dogs & cats stalk prey they may point their head in a slightly different direction to help camouflage their outline in the terrain, but will track with the side of their eyes.
however they point in the direction they are heading even when they are circling around something.

the natural alert process of a cat or dog is to always point the head except when in a non lethal scenario when they will track something with their ears
pet owners see them doing this in the house and garden often.
"ear tracking"

it is not uncommon for cats and dogs to have specific character unique trait's to hunting and killing

I believe that cat. (and you) ;)

Actually, cats and dogs are quite different in their perceptive equipment, as well as their hunting technique.
Cats stalk and pounce; dogs chase and run down; stealth vs. speed.
Cats have relatively poor distance vision, but see better than dogs close-up; both are better than humans at motion detection.
It's quite possible that the cat staring at the wall (not for an hour! Maybe five minutes, before she's bored and starts washing her paws or chasing a moth) because of an interesting pattern of light we're not sensitive enough to notice.
Or she's simply daydreaming; looking at a wall, but seeing Barcelona.

Unless one insists that cats hallucinate, it's hard not to admit, based on numerous accounts and videos, that they can see quickly moving entities that we can't see. In the last video posted below, you have two cats turning their heads and looking at something in perfect sync with each other, proving that what they are seeing is really there and moving around. What must they be seeing? The entities seem to move around on the ceiling and on the upper walls, prompting some cats to try to attack them. See what you think.

It could be that with cats anyway, they have a keener sense of hearing and smell than we humans do, so perhaps they sense a presence that simply isn't there, based on their acute sensory perception? In other words, if we had the same sense of hearing or sight, we might be jumping out of our skin too, every few seconds, racing down the hall towards nothing at all. lol This isn't to say that ghosts couldn't possibly exist, but I don't think the litmus test begins and ends with animal perceptions.

The cat's reactions appear to be visual not auditory. The cat tracks it visually as it quickly moves from one part of the room to another. And the person taking the video doesn't mention any sounds. Seems to me they're really seeing something. WHAT that is remains open to question.

I have also observed that if you ACT like there's a ghost there, your dog will go nuts - because he/she is an expert at reading you. (Cats, of course, could care less.)

Could have been the tiniest insect that no humans can see. They also have great eye sight. lol In truth, it is a bit creepy when animals react as they do to what seems to be nothing, to the rest of us.

I remember a few years ago, staying over a friend’s house, and the family had a German shepherd. This one night, the dog would look past everyone, while sitting on the floor and start barking for a good five minutes, as if it was trying to alert everyone to something. The barking was so loud and continuous.

I never slept there again.
