Bread and frenchfries cause cancer

That's funny? It seems to work for me. (using a Mozilla 0.99 and Mac OS X [10.1.4])

Anyway, I don't think this is such a hot topic yet. I mean this stuff hasn't been published in any scientific media yet. It is just popular science as it is.

It is interesting to wonder where the nitrogen comes from... It sure ain't in the carbohydrates, as you well know. The air? But how does it come into contact with the carbohydrates immersed in oil? (referring to the french fries)

:bugeye:

Perhaps Mickey D's should take note, Killing off your patrons isn't good for business.

(Personally I don't eat anything from their because the sly dogs think they are funny BLANCHING their fries in ANIMAL FATS and then having the Audacidy to put signs up saying "Fried in Vegetable oil" and even using the whole, not telling a vegetarian thing because its "harmless", well isn't harmless, It's as harmless as taking a burger as a suppository.

As for Cancerous foodstuffs, sheesh stare at the text on your monitor too long and too close and you'll probably get brain cancer, get sunburnt you'll probably get cancer, eat the wrong foods you get cancer, stand underneath a MOBILE phone emittor you get cancer, infact now adays there are so many mast where ever you stand it's like standing under an antenna....

"doom I tell you, doom...." *walks away with sandwich board, (yes another food source that no doubt causes cancer)

It seems that food preservatives are not much better. At least the manufactured kind that we are familiar with.

Mickey D's???? that sounds vaguely familar for some reason. What are you trying to say Stryderunknown?

Mickey D's aka MacDonald$. Okay now their gonna be pee'd at losing their mask name, but what the hey. Anyone fancy a cooked rat that could cause cancer? (alright the meal deal doesn't come with a rat)

I was teasing about Mickey D's. The simile came through loud and clear. I was just wondering if you would come out and say it. :D

Warning: Eating at Mickey's D's could cause unknown side effects.

Well, life is deadly and I guess it came as no suprise that chips too causes cancer. But you have to eat very much of it during an extended period of time for it to do any more harm than increase you weight.

Possible source of acrylamide contamination

I note from this report:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_1993000/1993435.stm

that the source of the acrylamide contamination in food is not yet
known, according to the UK Food Standards Agency.

Is it possible that polyacrylamide "drift reduction agents", used
in pesticides, as reported here:

http://www.ag.uiuc.edu/cespubs/pest/articles/v989j.html

may be responsible for this contamination?

The contamination could be carried through to the food chain in the vegetable oils used in frying, roasting and baking (most breads contains vegetable oil). Heating of the polyacrylamide could cause degeneration to the harmful acrylamide monomer. Increased heating (frying, for example) would cause increased degradation. Boiled product would not show the presence of acrylamide because vegetable oils are not used.

Hope this is of interest and look forward to hearing your
comments.

Return to the subject...

This topic is really getting a spin in the media lately and I really need to concur with "amide"'s analysis...

The mediterranean diet has for centuries consisted of heavy baked bread consumption and yet many live to well in their 90's and usually die of heart disease moreso than cancer... I really think amide has something there with his theory on the pesticide or indeed any chemical use since all these chemicals tend to use acrylamide as an agent.

Acrylamide polymerizes at high temperatures and indeed even boils at temperatures just over 257 F degrees than means that if any molecules of this chemical exist in conditions of temperature in excess of 257 F degrees (ie: Deep frying, baking) they are undergoing a chemical/molecular change and this change is what could turn these molecules carcinogenic.

The emphasis should not be on avoiding these foods.. I simply do not believe that carcinogens occur naturally in wheat, potatoes, etc... but I feel the emphasis should be on consuming ORGANICALLY GROWN versions of these foods.. ie: organic source oils and potatoes to make fries, organic grains to make breads, etc.

If this is a wake-up call to anyone it is to the chemical companies who have been narrow minded so as to overlook the far-reaching implications of their products.

It must be stressed that Acrylamide is not a naturally occuring substance.. it is a manufactured chemical compound... logic tells us how it gets into our food chain.

bread and french fries causes cancer?

Why is it that researchers make it a big deal that foods like bread and french fries causes cancer? It may cause cancer but don't a person need to eat it in megga doses over a period of time to get cancer? I mean a lot of people have always eating breads and french fries but majority of them hasn't gotten cancer.
