The study published in the Journal of Neuroscience tells us the following information: Bmi1 is expressed in the subventricular zone (SVZ) in vivo and in cortical neural stem cells (NSCs) as well as in progenitor cells in vitro. A decreased proliferation was observed in the cortex at birth as well as in the newborn and adult SVZ of Bmi1-/- mice. NSCs showed a failure in self-renewal in vitro by means of Bmi1-siRNA (Bmi1-small interfering RNA). Reduction in the colony number formation was also observed using antisense morpholinos.
