I'm told by a friend that 1 in 5 men start going bald by the age of 30, and by age 60, 66% of men are bald. Is this true? Are there some factors that key into how fast the loss is, besides genetics?

The following seems high: 66% of men are bald by age 60. Maybe 66% have lost some hair just above their forehead.

Most forms of baldness due to hereditary are sex linked. It is carried as a recessive on the X Chromosome.

A man can inherit from his mother, but not from his father: His father contributes a Y Chromosome.

If your maternal grandfather was bald, you have a 50-50 chance of being bald. You need a bald mother to be certain to inherit baldness.

A woman has a 50-50 chance of being bald if both her father & her maternal grandfather were bald.

Just found this info from http://www.zimbio.com/Hair+Loss/articles/ttFys87SDCi/75+percent+men+will+experience+baldness+35 .

Physicians says there are 5 cause hair loss in men, namely:
......*
.........
Hair follicles continuously would require amino acids to support the growth of hair on the scalp. These cells need energy to breed and grow, to meet consumption needs minerals, amino acids and vitamins.

If amino acid intake is not found, then the activity of hair follicles will be hampered and in the hair cells are not able to produce more hair.

If you suffer from hair loss or hair thin, then there is the possibility the body lacks the amino acid cytokine. This can be overcome by eating protein for thick hair, and if the condition does not get better you should consult with your doctor to prescribe a specific amino acid supplements.

Very interesting Mr Dino, thanks for the info.

Found some new information...

Here are some statistics for "hair loss", meaning hair that is already
gone or on the way out.

Age*** Percentage
20**** 20%
30**** 30%
40**** 40%
50**** 50%
60**** 50-65%
70**** 80%

"The percentage of men experiencing male pattern baldness roughly
corresponds to age: 35% of men age 35 are affected, 50% of men age 50, and
so on. One out of five men start losing hair soon after puberty and are
completely bald by age 30. Three out of five gradually lose their hair
between ages 30 and 60. By age 70, one out of five have a full head of
hair."

hair loss by age 50 years."

"40% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 35 and 65% by age 60."

"By age forty, 40 percent of women and nearly 40 percent of men have
visible signs of hereditary hair loss. By age fifty, 50 percent of both
genders show visible signs of hair loss."

http://www.hairlossadvisory.org/factsandmyths.html
"50 percent of all men experience hair loss sometime in their lives."

I think that after about 70 the curve should flatten out.* If you've still
got hair at that point the chance of loosing it goes down dramatically.

Again the numbers above are for "hair loss".* Now if you are looking for
"bald" there is not as much info available.* I would think that is due to
the vague definition of being "bald".* But here is what I found.

"more than 30% of adult men go completely bald by age 55"

"nearly 70% are completely bald by the time they reach sixty."
found looking around. It was on this site..http://uclue.com/?xq=412

my mother's father was bald, and I'll be darned if my hair hasn't been slowly thinning since my mid 40's. I don't mind though--my friend was bald by his mid 20's. I think you reach a age where it doesn't really matter much.
