I enjoy Joan Miro for his whimsical style and vibrant color combinations.

Since I first saw his paintings they have always made me feel better by

looking at them. It just seems he likes to play around with designs that

create a childlike inference.

From Wikipedia:

Joan Miró i Ferrà (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983) was a Spanish (Catalan) painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain to the family of a Goldsmith and Watchmaker. His work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods and his desire to "kill", "murder", or "rape" them in favor of more contemporary means of expression.[1]

Young Miró was drawn towards the arts community that was gathering in Montparnasse and in 1920 moved to Paris. There, under the influence of the poets and writers, he developed his unique style: organic forms and flattened picture planes drawn with a sharp line. Generally thought of as a Surrealist because of his interest in automatism and the use of sexual symbols (for example, ovoids with wavy lines emanating from them), Miró’s style was influenced in varying degrees by Surrealism and Dada, yet he rejected membership to any artistic movement in the interwar European years. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, described him as "the most Surrealist of us all." Miró confessed to creating one of his most famous works, Harlequin's Carnival, under similar circumstances:

"How did I think up my drawings and my ideas for painting? Well I'd come home to my Paris studio in Rue Blomet at night, I'd go to bed, and sometimes I hadn't any supper. I saw things, and I jotted them down in a notebook. I saw shapes on the ceiling..."[2]

Who are some of your favorites and link some of their works if possible.

Good thread.

One of my favorite artists is Lucian Freud grandson of Sigmund Freud.

I enjoy his paintings for their skillful brushwork and the penetrating psychological impression they deliver.

M C Escher:

Maurits Cornelis, or "Mauk" as he came to be nicknamed[1], was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. He was the youngest son of civil engineer George Arnold Escher and his second wife, Sara Gleichman. In 1903, the family moved to Arnhem where he took carpentry and piano lessons until he was thirteen years old.

From 1903 until 1918 he attended primary and secondary school. Though he excelled at drawing, his grades were generally poor, and he was required to repeat the course twice. In 1919, Escher attended the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts. He briefly studied architecture, but switched to decorative arts and studied under Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, with whom he would remain friends for years. In 1922 Escher left the school, having gained experience in drawing and making woodcuts.

Deep, Is that a pic of Jean Reno??

It's Lucian Freud... it's a self-portrait.

Wow...thanks DT for introducing me to this artist. I can't take my eyes off it!. The deep brush strokes just radiate emotion. You can really "feel" that painting. Very powerful.

I love Frank Lloyd Wright. I don't know if y'all consider architecture art, but I sure do.
I'm hoping to get to Chicago so I can see the Tribune Tower. I want to see all those pieces of other places.
There is so much art around us, all we need to do is look up.

Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, most famous for his marine subjects. Largely self-taught, he is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America, and a preeminent figure in American art.

Beginning his career working as a commercial illustrator, Homer subsequently took up oil painting, producing major works in the studio characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium, and watercolor, with which he created a fluid and prolific oeuvre primarily chronicling his working vacations.[1]
