I think we prefer the current system. It works for a change.

I must say that I'm fairly happy with it myself.
And I do think that, say, having Fraggle moderating Linguistics
adds to that forum. Not decided.

Discontents. You say why you are unhappy.
Is it the moderation or the moderators.
I can see that the Contents only marginally outweigh the Discontents.
Speak your mind. How do you think that things should change?

Believe it or not, there exists a subset of SciForums members who bitch just to bitch.

I kinda like the leniency. But I see a lot of hate posts and discrimination, and I think this is letting things get way out of hand. Stuff like 'I hate homosexuals, they should all die' or 'I hope you die of ass cancer'. That's just ridiculous, and definitely deserves a permanent ban.

Oh, I couldn't agree more! :D

I don't know.. the last one. I guess it was abolished a month or so ago ?

I was totally absent from about October until about New Year's Day. Unfortunately, I still don't understand which system you're talking about. Can you describe what you liked about it, and what you think we should carry over to the current system? That might help me. Sorry I'm so ignorant.

I find it quite interesting that many people say we're being lenient. I know there's a very vocal minority here that thinks we're harshing their style, man! We're Nazis and an extension of the Man, man!

Whenever I'm roaming in the subforums I moderate, I very infrequently use my powers beyond moving threads that obviously don't belong in my domain. I'm reluctant to use my powers beyond that because of the odd belief that we're all Nazis, man!

I think we should be allowed to flame someone if they're being an arse.

Ehh, I feel like agreeing with you on a primal basis. Arses annoy me too. But the more intellectual and fair-minded side of me says it's not a good idea. It only causes more problems.

The one with the yellow and red infractions, and the infraction points that stick for a while. When they reach a certain amount you'll be banned.
Actually pretty much as it is now but with infractions.
I've never known the system to be different though..

Such 'Private' polls don't give you accurate results, they never do. You'd be surprised the number of Sock puppets just sitting there waiting to vote on such polls. You could probably strike about 5 votes from the discontent list.

Ah, yes. Thanks. :)

I forget why we changed that system so that only moderators could give infractions. I imagine it's because people could just give each other fractions just because they disagree with them, which is bad. I'm not sure of that, but I am fairly sure we had a reason. Still, your suggestion is noted.

The one I'm talking about is with only moderators giving out infractions though.
I guess people giving each other infractions is before my time, and I wouldn't want such a system either. *horror*

There was a poll about abolishing the system and the voters voted to abolish it.
So now we have a remnant of the 'old' system. The infractions are gone and replaced by warnings. People still get banned though.

I think it would be a good thing to get the infractions back and that moderators stop replying to whining threads. Maybe even sanction whining and making whining threads. That's about it.. :)

why is it called sock puppet and not puppet? Why the 'sock' part?

"A sock puppet is a puppet made from a sock (or similar garment) which is placed over the hand of a puppeteer."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sock_puppet

sock_puppet.jpg

"A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an Internet community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks while pretending not to, like a puppeteer manipulating a hand puppet.

In current usage, the perception of the term has been extended beyond second identities of people who already post in a forum to include other uses of misleading online identities. For example, a NY Times article claims that "sock-puppeting" is defined as "the act of creating a fake online identity to praise, defend or create the illusion of support for one’s self, allies or company."

The key difference between a sockpuppet and a regular pseudonym (sometimes termed an "alt") is the active exploitation of the pretense that the puppet is a third party who is not affiliated with the puppeteer. Using multiple identities for privacy purposes (for example, one identity divulges information which is easily identifiable and the other identity acts as a whistleblower) is not considered sockpuppetry unless one identity expresses assent to another identity's posting."

yeah, but why sockpuppet and not just puppet?

Considering that most sock puppeteers aren't near clever enough to create a Marionette, so they have to make do with what they have at hand... which to most people is what you wear on your feet. (They're a little odd like that)
