Australian scientists found a proof that the appendix has important role in digestive health. Apparently, it a safe haven for good bacteria. Teamed up with immune cells, appendix helps protecting gut during bacterial infections or food poisoning. It also helps boosting the immune systems of cancer patients.
Despite these findings, there is a still high risk of rupturing, so many patients need to have their appendix removed.
