Another 'reaction' addition

zox - I wanted to suggest adding a new reaction choice to the forums - something along the lines of "useful" or "helpful." I think it would be a great addition for posts/threads that provide valuable information or assistance to others here, but you don't necessarily ''like'' or ''agree'' with them. Would you consider it?

Sure but the Like emoji serves that purpose already, IMO. So does the hearty-heart emoji.

Never mind what they're called - if I see a post that's dense with information, and it has a Like or Heart emoji, i'm going to assume that post is useful and helpful.

But suppose it's useful, and the member took time to really provide a good argument, yet you don't agree with or like it? I tend to view the 'like' feature as just what it states, I like it and agree with it. The heart-eyes option is subjective, I think. I may find something hysterically funny or a poem to be particular poignant, but others might think it's just meh. The 'helpful/useful' option allows for if you don't like the content, or agree with it, but you appreciate the poster's view or the content is useful to the forum, as a whole. I won't be offended if zox chooses not to add it, just thought I'd toss the idea out there.

See, I'd select useful/helpful on your post above, because I don't necessarily agree with it. I don't dislike it, nor do I disagree, but the 'useful' option would be better with that specific post, in my opinion. Like maybe you're close to 'like,' but not quite there. lol

I've belonged to a forum on which there was an "informative" tag that could be selected, distinct from a "like". It seemed to have its uses, recognising a person for contributing relevant information about a topic, but without the need to endorse any particular viewpoint expressed by the poster.

By the way, does anyone know why I can select the various different reaction tags when accessing the forum from my laptop, but can only select a generic "like" when using my iPad? Both use the Apple Safari browser.

Exactly this. I feel as though the 'like' reaction option is for those posts/threads that I agree with, or 'endorse.' Good way of putting it!

When logged in to SF using my iPhone, I have to click and hold down 'like,' then the buffet of options pops up. Unlike when using my laptop, I can hover the cursor over 'like,' and the options appear. Maybe try that and see if it helps.

It works! Thanks.

I'm trying hard to imagine a post that I think is useful and informative but that I do not agree with.

They kind of go hand-in-hand. I would not upvote a primer on Astrology even if it were chock full of information - because it's chock full of bad information.

I'm not trying to poo-poo the idea, I'm simply trying to understand it.

I think it’s possible to disagree with political ideas for example, yet when someone goes into depth on how they came to believe what they do, you might find it useful insomuch as it helps you to better understand where they’re coming from.

I’m not into smoking for example yet if a smoker explained to me why it’s so difficult to quit, I’d consider it helpful to know that. If that discussion happened on SF, I wouldn’t like the explanation, because in essence, it would feel like a set of excuses to justify smoking, but I’d find it useful/helpful info to know why some people choose to smoke cigarettes.

I was flippin' dangerous when I went cold turkey. My friends moved me to a cave in the Mojave, left me supplies and an emergency radio and fled. I was trying to get the coyotes to fight me. That was forty plus years ago. Haven't smoked since. The idea disgusts me today.

Congrats! I've never smoked, but your story can serve as a cautionary tale. And I'd consider your post 'useful/helpful,' if I had that reaction option.

When I quit I kept repeating "I'm stronger than this addiction." Eventually it was true. Dodged the cancer(s) that killed both parents.

It's an additional thing.
You could make a point I agree with.

QM is the best theory we have that describes the micro world (and other things)
You - Like, you agree.

I post a thread on Dark matter detection project in Italy, XENONnT and how the team are coping with the Neutrino noise that will mask results.

You - Informative, as you were not aware.
