No, this guy was a young loser that went to iraq looking for work making things with his hands.
Have you seen this guy? He's no undercover mercenary let me tell you, great disguise if he was, no ones going to expect bill from bill and teds excellent adventure.
They purposefully did this to an innocent person to send a message. Doing it to a soldier wouldn't have had the desired effect.
 
Perhaps, but I'm speaking more on the overall label placed on US civilian security contractors that are somehow not mercenaries.

Other Iraqis that have died were actually fighting with guns and bombs and were targets for the troops. We all know the terrorists and insurgents like to use human shields so they can show the civilian deaths to anger others. The media doesn't have to show any of this stuff and no one would object not seeing it I'm certain. Just being told is bad enough but the MEDIA wants to push it down our throats. The MEDIA is not only to blame but I would say they are on the top of the list when it comes to provoking and inciting people with sensationalism and not knowing what the actual truth is. As in many instances the media loves to show only part of the story but when all is said and done the media never admits mistakes.

Uhhmm.. I don’t know. The pictures of Americans abusing the Iraqis were so well made for display and distribution. I mean who would be stupid enough to get a camera, buy a dog leash and take hundreds of pictures “just for fun”? But to say that this was a strategic move by the administration to eventually sway public opinion on their side is.. well .. lunatic. Do you think that Rumy would put his own neck on the line?! There’s other things they could do which are much much less risky and with greater payout (I’m still waiting for them to find the WMD the US planted - which is the single thing that would validate the premise for the war).

I think its bigger than rummy, and I think he'd gladly pay the small price of maybe sort of almost seeming responsible for what really seems like childish pranks and what no one would really think he was responsible for. If people were being honest, I doubt they'd really think rumsfeld ordered young soldiers to force iraqis into posing for sexually suggestive photographs. Its just natural for people to assume this was the brainchild of young fun-loving soldiers. Which is the beauty of the scheme.

There’s other things they could do which are much much less risky and with greater payout (I’m still waiting for them to find the WMD the US planted - which is the single thing that would validate the premise for the war).

Planting wmd is too predictable, its something that people would accuse them of which means its likely they'd get busted if they did it. And finding wmd wouldn't silence the leftists, they'd just find something else to whine about. I think the long term goal is to make iraqis look like savages. Look how easy it was to make them saw off an innocent persons head. A few more jabs with the stick and they'll be doing god knows what and between vomitting sessions the leftists will be saying 'ok, that was messed up, blow these fuckers to hell'. It will take time, but the western world will get sick of these people eventually, if the US play their cards right. I don't think they have been, but now I think they're really putting a concerted effort in to obtaining that goal.

i think the west, i.e. western culture, is superior in this sense, because it does not allow this treatment of prisoners, no matter how bad the crime is.

Obviously that would be very easy. But the battle is not with iraqis, its with liberal americans, and thus needs to be much more strategic.
Its disgraceful that a countries largest hurdle in war is members of its own team, but thats the way it is.
