By late Friday afternoon, some locksmiths, car dealerships and towing companies had been flooded with calls about mysteriously malfunctioning keyless vehicle entry devices. There were nearly as many theories as there were lockouts. But there were no firm answers as to why the remote devices stopped working.

Then again it might have been those reporters with imaginations trying to fill the blank pages that they had to fill ! :D
 
Perhaps it could of been Electromagnetic interference that messed with the Wireless mechanism inside all those keys.

Almost certainly, especially near an Airforce base. I know for certain that the Radars at Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, UK, which are part of the missile early warning system, cause various makes of car to lock their owners out. The receivers get swamped, and the fobs just can't compete.

The answer? Use the key!

Yeah, but hicks in pickup trucks don't have automatic door locks...
