A smacked child is a successful child, study finds

Failing to smack your child does not mean your child is a spoiled brat.

How many children have you raised, James? Or is all of your child-rearing knowledge from books written by others? I'm just wondering, because you seem so logical and rational about it all, so Spock-like. And yet rowdy kids could test even the most self-disciplined of us humans. But you claim to be above it all ....even better than Spock. Explain.

Spock, setting the standard of child rearing galaxy wide.

Really...well I was smacked a lot as a child so I should be even twice as successful as I am now.

Nietzsche gives me at least one smack a day, usually when I am bending down to pick something up. So does this mean I am going to be a really successful senior citizen? lol

LOL.....Spock

I find that most experts, or they think they are when it comes to raising and disciplining kids have never had any.

Just check out the many threads on Sciforums having to do with raising and disciplining children.

So one minute we have a study saying that spanking lowers IQ. Next we have one saying spanked kids are SUCCESSFUL!

A) these studies are highly correlation based which means we don't know which causes the other, it could be that stupid children get spanked more, not the spanking made them stupid.

B) In america IQ is NOT a key to success.

Well, you know what they say ..."Those who can, do; Those who can't, teach!" :D

I didn't mind getting hit as long as I got that last word. I always felt like I won. I'm still not sure if I was right or wrong but it seems like in the end I was the one with the bruise on my face...

When does the raising end, according to you?

A little playing with words, James, just to keep from having to answer the question? ...LOL!

Just think of it, you're probably the only one here who doesn't understand the term "raising children". That says a lot about you, James!

Hey, how 'bout in one of the next threads around here, I make use to that same tactic when we're talking about racism and blacks and laws and such? I mean, I could use "certain" words or terms and claim that I didn't know that they meant something different/horrible to blacks. Can I do that, James? :D

So now, James, .....How many children have you raised?

I don't think the term "smacked" means being hit hard enough to raise a nasty bruise on the kid's face. I would consider bruises like that as assault or child abuse ....and that's a helluva lot different to "smacking".

I also fail to see your comment about winning or losing. Smacking a kid is not about win or lose, it's about teaching discipline when the kid won't listen to reason or is wild and uncontrollable.

I was spanked once. It taught me to hate/despise/fear my father. I forgave him, moved on, and turned out to be an amazing CCR adult...

Are you confusing Mr Spock and Dr Spock?

As usual, the best answer is .........read the thread, follow the trains of thought if you can. If you do that, and still can't figure it out, post again asking for help in understanding it all.

You've never in your adult life wanted to smack someone? You never got drunk in college and got in a fight? You never had someone just piss you off to the point you wanted to rip his head off?

Being an adult doesn't mean you become an emotionless robot, you know. It just means you learn to restrain yourself.

As to the OP, of course well disciplined children are more successful than spoiled brats.

So you believe being smacked by a drunken, pissed off adult might be a useful child discipline tactic? Next time my Doctor misdiagnoses me perhaps I'll try it out.

I could be wrong here, but I don't think that's what Madant meant ....not be the longest of shots! Wanna' try reading it again, or would it make any difference to you?

So one minute we have a study saying that spanking lowers IQ...
If you read the spanking=low IQ study, you'll see that they really only showed that frequent spanking lowers IQ. There was no correlation between spanking and low IQ if the spanking was infrequent - I don't remember the number exactly, but it was something like spanking more than 6 times/year before IQ started lowering. This study, from the sketchy details given in the articles (and I still can't find that actual paper - how the heck could there be this many news articles on a study that's so hard to find???) it appears that she was looking at any spanking vs. no spanking at all.

So, taking the two studies together at face value, there appears to be both an upper and lower statistical bound for how often one should hit their kids.

B) In america IQ is NOT a key to success.

Aside from a statistical super-minority blessed with abnormal athletic ability, great beauty or a great singing voice, how many dullards in America have high-paying careers?
